Anything’s possible for Scotland’s model of the year and rising star of Burberry’s ad campaign
GLASWEGIAN model Misha Hart is on a roll. After carrying off the Model of the Year award at the Scottish Fashion Awards, she’s currently one of the stars of Burberry’s S/S 2016 advertising campaign, which was launched this week. Shot by long-term Burberry collaborator Mario Testino with the creative direction of Christopher Bailey, Burberry chief creative and chief executive officer, the campaign features an all-British cast of newcomers chosen for their energy and attitude.
Having already walked in the Burberry Prorsum AW14 show, Hart joins Dylan Brosnan (Pierce’s son), sisters Ruth and May Bell and Bella Yentob and if she follows in the footsteps of Cara Delevingne, Suki Waterhouse and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, who were all given a big career boost by the brand, she’ll definitely be going places.
The campaign that launches the heritage label’s S/S 2016 Functionregalia collection was the first to be shot and published live for 24 hours through Snapchat as it happened in October, and includes classic coats and functional pieces mixed with regalia. There’s metallic cording, crested buttons and English lace. Floor-length satin dresses are paired with biker jackets, regimental tailoring with tie-dye tulle. Also in the collection is the brand’s key bag for the season, the Burberry Rucksack, in gabardine-constructed nylon.
Away from the catwalk you’ll find London-based Hart making music, in which she hopes to forge a parallel career to harmonise with modelling. It’s no surprise then that the 21-year-old’s personal style takes inspiration from the likes of Nick Cave and PJ Harvey, David Bowie and Iggy Pop. So, it’s sound and vision, all tied up with one of Burberry’s iconic cashmere check scarves, which Hart points out are just like her, made in Scotland.
What do you do and how did you get into it?
I currently model. I was discovered by a model scout who introduced me to the agency, Viva London. We hit it off and it started from there.
What’s been your most exciting and rewarding job?
The Burberry SS16 campaign has been without a doubt the most exciting and rewarding project I’ve been a part of to date – it’s so innovative and fresh. I loved being part of the campaign’s live Snapchat release too. It’s a huge honour to work with Burberry, being a brand that prides itself on craftsmanship with designs such as the iconic cashmere scarves, which may I add are woven in Scotland.
Tell us about your experience on the Burberry shoot?
I was unbelievably excited to work for the first time with Burberry’s Christopher Bailey, whose work I greatly admire. Also to have the opportunity to work with Mario Testino, being one of the industry’s most renowned photographers. There was a great sense of camaraderie on set with Christopher and Mario (pictured below with Hart).
How did you feel when you won the Model of the Year award in the Scottish Fashion Awards?
The concept of me winning an award is far out! It’s nice to be recognised for your work and it’s even more special when that recognition comes from your home country. It made me feel very proud to be Scottish.
What challenges have you faced?
Within the modelling industry there are going to be people who tell you to change in one way or another, and as a young woman this can be tough. Especially when it comes to your physical appearance. Which is why it’s important to have good self-esteem, a challenge faced by many young women today.
What has been the biggest surprise along the way?
I’ve surprised myself in many ways over the past two years. I never thought I’d be capable of travelling on my own and navigating my way round a foreign city, but this job has taught me to be fiercely independent, and that’s something I’m extremely proud of.
What are your goals?
I’d like people to hear my music in 2016, and continue to model.
Do you ever hang on to the things you model?
I get asked this question a lot, and people are always surprised to hear that I almost never keep the clothes I model.
What have you learned?
I have learned how important it is to do things on your own terms, even if that means not pleasing everyone all the time. You have to stand your ground and remember your own value.
What’s your style philosophy and whose style or designs do you like most?
I don’t really have a philosophy because I don’t like to limit myself with rules or genres. Right now I like wearing things that look a bit sleazy and masculine, like satin shirts and old leather jeans. And I love suits.
Who are your style icons?
Nick Cave and John Cooper Clarke for their slim tailored suits, PJ Harvey for the feminine 90s badass thing she had going on, Bowie for his boldness and Iggy for being unapologetically cool.
What do you do when you’re not working?
You will usually find me writing and recording songs.
What would you do if you weren’t modelling?
If I weren’t modelling I’d continue to make music. It’s what I’ve done my entire life. I need to keep creative.
