The songs are great. But this attempt to string together a host of Weimar era Brecht and Cole Porter songs into a dramatic retelling falls at a number of hurdles.

The story of an American ingenue lost in Paris who falls down on her luck and winds up in a brothel lurches from cliche to cliche. The narrative is nonsensical, repetitive and overlong.
There are chanteuses who know how to fall apart on stage but you have to be very good to pull it off.
Without the requisite wit and insight, this tragic heroine just comes across as bad tempered.
