Tennessee rockers take UK No1 spot on third attempt

AMERICAN rockers Paramore shot straight to number one in the album charts yesterday with their third album Brand New Eyes.

The Tennessee band, whose sound has been likened to "pop punk" and "alternative rock", knocked Madonna's greatest hits collection Celebration off the top spot after just one week.

The singer matched Elvis Presley's record of 11 UK Number 1 solo albums when Celebration hit the top last week.

Brand New Eyes is Paramore's first UK number one, according to the Official Charts Company, which compiles the chart.

Their previous best placing in Britain came with second album Riot! released in 2007 which peaked at number 24.

Riot! went on to be certified gold in the UK and platinum in the United States, with current sales standing at more than two million copies worldwide.

The group embarks on a UK tour on 10 December. Three of the seven UK dates are already sold out.

Other new album entries this week are: Newton Faulkner's Rebuilt By Humans at number three, Barbra Streisand's Love Is The Answer at number four and My Way by former Stone Roses singer Ian Brown at number eight.

There is no change at the top of the singles chart, with singer-songwriter Taio Cruz holding on to pole position with Break Your Heart for a third week.
