Former chorus girl wins top prize for her first novel

A FORMER West End chorus girl has won a prestigious literary prize for her first novel.

Moira Young scooped the Costa Children’s Book Award for Blood Red Road, set in a lawless future where a young girl searches for her twin brother, who has been kidnapped by mysterious black-robed riders.

The judges said: “It’s astonishing how, in her first novel, Moira Young has so successfully bound believable characters into a heart-stopping adventure. She kept us reading, and left us hungry for more.”

Ms Young, who was born in Canada but now lives in Bath, moved to the UK in the 1980s and worked as a comedian and in the chorus of Richard Eyre’s High Society before performing as an opera singer.
