Book review: Saturday Night

Saturday Night Peter by Peter Kay is published by Century, priced £20.

It's been a long wait for the second instalment of Kay's autobiography, and this offering could be taken two ways. If you're a huge Peter Kay fan and can laugh despite having watched his two stand-up DVDs 1,000 times, then you'll find plenty of laughs here. However, if like me you were hoping for a deeper insight into his rise to fame and what makes him tick, you may be left slightly disappointed.

Kay has always been a private man and, once again, keeps those close to him largely out of the book. It's such a shame as the few laugh-out-loud and poignant moments dotted around the pages relate to personal incidents involving his mum, dad, nan and friend Paddy McGuinness.

I say 'few moments' as the rest of the pages are filled with recounts of his stand-up shows, and it's simply not as funny when it's read as it is being delivered by the master.

7/10 Review by Caroline Davison
