£2 million day care centre opens in Cumbernauld

Seafar is the site of the new day care centre which will provide specialist care to elderly residents

The building which is on the former site of the Antonine Care Home in Seafar will provide both care and health services for over 65s with complex needs and can accommodate around 25 patients daily.

Cutting-edge services now on offer at the state-of-the-art complex include medication reviews, physiotherapy, speech and language support and memory clinics.

And the all new Antonine Day Care Centre will also act as a social hub for the senior citizens via arts and crafts sessions. There is also an on-site kitchen facility where pensioners and visitors can enjoy meals and snacks prepared by staff.

A landscaped garden has also been incorporated into the design.

Carers are also being encouraged to visit and be involved in the planning of care and informal reviews of treatment received.

Councillor Sam Love, convenor of Housing and Social Work Services said: “This facility will provide a quality care service for those most at need.

“Integrated day care services are vital to support older people who want to live independently and to avoid unnecessary admissions to hospitals and care homes.

“People will now receive specialist care from health and social work professionals, including individual assessments and treatments to meet their individual needs

The Cumbernauld complex is being run in partnership with North Lanarkshire Council and NHS Lanarkshire. Their original facility opened in 1994 and NLC had planned to spend £500,000 refurbishing the centre.

It then emerged however that the total cost of restoration would be £850,000, the decision was taken to replace the centre in its entirety.
