Album review: Rough Guide to Music of the Romanian Gypsies

ROUGH GUIDE TO THE MUSIC OF THE ROMANIAN GYPSIES **** RGNET, £7.99

THIS is such an obvious topic for a Rough Guide that I'm surprised that it hasn't been done before now, but it's well done here.

Romania has the largest Gypsy population in Europe, and this ethnic strain has now pervaded its clubs, so we get hip-hop, jazz rock, and local pop all fusing with it.

We kick off with the inevitable Taraf de Haidouks followed by the equally inevitable Fanfare Ciocarlia, but then move into less familiar territory via Gabi Lunca (whose solo CD I praised back in May) and a cluster of new names, making this CD an excellent starting place for newcomers to this music.
