THE Scottish Liberal Democrats will announce their new leader tomorrow with Tavish Scott, the Shetland MSP, the favourite to win the vote.
About 4,000 Liberal Democrat members were entitled to take part in the contest and it is understood that between 2,500 and 3,000 will have done so when the votes are counted tomorrow morning.

Mr Scott, the former transport minister, has led from t
he start but he has faced a tough challenge from Mike Rumbles, the independently minded backbencher, and Ross Finnie, the former rural development minister.

Voters have been asked to rank the candidates in order of preference for the election, which will be decided by the single transferable vote method.

If no candidate has a majority after the first round of voting then the candidate with the least votes – expected to be Mr Finnie – would drop out and his second preferences would be allocated to the others.

Liberal Democrat insiders believe that Mr Rumbles could pick up many of Mr Finnie's second preferences and they believe he could make the final outcome much closer than Mr Scott's team expect.

Mr Rumbles said: "If I do win it will certainly signal a new direction, a new era, for the Liberal Democrats."

Mr Scott said he had been concentrating on economic uncertainties and the problems facing ordinary people.

He said: "That's where I believe we have to be as a party in the future."

I was just about to write the same thing Arthur. Then I saw that you had and decided it would be a bit pointless.

Not sure I was going to use the exact same words but the message would certainly have been similar.

That means they will lose even more votes in the elections.

Suicide. Electoral suicide, plain and simple.

#1 - the obvious answer to your question is "you do!" since you took time out from your busy schedule to comment!

Personally I would prefer the competent Ross Finnie in the post, however in this day and age it's all about style and nothing about substance, isn't it?

It's all theory to Scott. There are no concrete proposals coming from him about how he and the LibDems will tackle the issues affecting people.

At least Mike Rumbles talks common sense. But that doesn't alter the Libs from being a collective non-event.

The lib dems seem to want to consine themselves to history if they vote for Scott. He is by far the worst of the candidates. They did the same with Stephen after Rumbles had clearly outperformed him at the last leadership election. And that helped cause the envitable decline.

Wasn't Tavish the man who led the Lib Dem decision to not coalesce with the SNP after the LibDems electoral embarrassment last year?

Tavish Scott, the man who took the "Democrat" out of Liberal Democrat.

A strange choice for the Libs if so

Tavish is the business as usual candidate. Since business as usual has led them from 2nd place in Scotland at the last Westminster election, to fourth last year it seems likely they will go for him, What a pity there ism't a truly liberal party in Scotland

Faustus #1.

Actually, Faustus, it was a comment more aimed at the irrelevence of the Lib Dems. That party has had its one shot at government, during its grubby little affair with Labour's Scottish fraction. Having, refuse a similar coalition with the SNP, I believe we will here lessand less of ths Lib Dems until, possibly, after independence, maybe not even then.

more of the same i feel. its a shame really because i really think that the lib dems had a real role to play in scottish politics in providing a real alternative to approaching politics. The true naunce behind liberal democracy, behind real social democracy needs to be revived in this nation.
