RANGERS today condemned the "disgusting" racial abuse of midfielder Maurice Edu following last night's Champions League defeat to Unirea Urziceni at Ibrox .
The club pledged to launch a full investigation into the incident.
In a post on his Twitter account this morning, USA international Edu sa
id: "Not sure what hurt more: result last nite or being racially abused by couple of r own fans as I'm getting in my car...smh (shaking my head]...off to rehab."
The 23-year-old midfielder is currently recovering from a knee injury and was a spectator as his side lost 4-1 to Romanian side Unirea Urziceni.
A Rangers spokesperson said: "Rangers Football Club condemns out of hand this moronic behaviour. The action of this individual is disgusting and completely unacceptable.
"It is extremely disappointing that people such as this attach themselves to the wider Rangers support and tarnish the image of the club and its fans.
"The club will now undertake a full investigation to identify the individual in question and take appropriate action. We would urge anyone who has information on the identity of the individual responsible to contact the club immediately."
Billy Singh, campaign manager for Show Racism the Red Card in Scotland, said: "We deplore this sort of behaviour. We are saddened and angered by it.
"It focusses on why we campaign against racism in football, because there are a minority of morons who continue to tarnish the game, and the evidence proves it.
"We also applaud Rangers' condemnation of the incident."
Rangers Supporters Trust spokesman David Edgar said: "These are not Rangers fans and they should be caught and prosecuted to the full extent of the law."
It is not the first time the player has complained of racist abuse on the social networking site.
In August he complained that he had been on the receiving end of hate-filled comments from a number of users.
Edu has made 16 appearances for Rangers since moving to Scotland from Toronto FC for £2.6million in August 2008.
