Poland and US missile deal likely to further strain Russian relations

Published Date: 20 August 2008
POLAND today sealed a controversial deal with the US to build an American missile base in the country.
US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Polish Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski signed the agreement for the base which has angered Russia.

The formal signing came six days after the two countries agreed to a deal that will see 10 US intercepto
r missiles placed just 115 miles from Russia's western frontier.

The deal has sparked threats from Russia that Poland is making itself vulnerable to attack – even a nuclear one.

The deal, and Russia's rhetoric, have further strained Moscow's ties with the West in the wake of its invasion of Georgia.

"The negotiations were very tough but friendly," Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk said after the signing.

"We have achieved our main goals, which means that our country and the United States will be more secure," he said.

Before signing the deal Ms Rice emphasised that the site is not intended as a threat.

"This is a system that is defensive and is not aimed at anyone," she said. "This is an agreement that will establish a missile defence site ... that will help us to deal with the new threats of the 21st century of a long-range missile threats from countries like Iran or from North Korea."

President Lech Kaczynski expressed "great satisfaction" at the outcome after months of negotiations.

"Both sides have achieved their goals. This is a great success for Poland," he said.

As well as clearing the way for the US missile defence shield to take shape, the deal is expected to further deepen Washington's military partnership with Poland, an ally in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Warsaw and Washington spent a year and a half negotiating, and talks recently had snagged on Poland's demands that the US bolster Polish security with short-range Patriot interceptor missiles in exchange for hosting the missile defence base.

The Patriots are meant to protect Poland from short-range missiles from neighbours – such as Russia.

Nice to see you brutal communists stick together.

#3 Puskas

You need to look up the difference between offensive and defensive, everyone knows the Soviets were putting in offensive "nuclear" missiles in Cuba. Pro communists will spout you can reconfigure them to make them an offensive weapon. The fact of the matter is that the pro communists hate the fact the US is putting in a counter measure to terrorists launching missles itno Western Europe or the US.

American Foreign policy is being formulated by people best described by the impression of a gangly, powerful, angry youth who acts on impulse and the adrenalin rush rather than logic! How would America feel is we had a repeat of the Cuban missle crisis and Russia set up a missle defense system that is "not aimed at anyone" but meant to protect Cuba from acts of aggression by hostile countries?

For as long as we have this kind of recklessness and immaturity I repeat my comment (made on another story) that America is the biggest threat to world peace in the 21st century! It's not Al Qaeda or the Taliban!!

Could it be that we are far more successful than Democracy?
Could it be that we are actually doing something good for the poor within our society?
Could it be that we actually stay at home and look after our house, instead of terrorizing globally like the US and the UK?
Or is it because so far we own you in the Olympics?

Why are so many communists placing posts here? Do you not think the rational readers here do not understand that Russia was placing offensive nuclear missles in Cuba!!! That is a big diference from placing defensive missles that shoot down the "bad" missles.

Wake up Commies!!!!

I know the pro communists that want to see a terrorist succesfully launch a missle into western Europe or the US will argue saying it's the same thing.

#12 Dope? Nope. Sorry, I'm not a communist, either - I just cannot abide hypocrisy. Only a screaming idiot of the very worst variety can deny that the US is not going out of its way to antagonise Russia. Obviously, the "war on terrorism" cannot be won (has it finally sunk in that terrorism is a criminal act, not an act of war?) and it's been decided that "commies" should retake their place as the global bogey-man.
15

I've got to hand it to you, you managed to get "communist" and "successful" in the same sentence....

do care to elaborate on that?

let me start with a few talking points....
1) name another "successful" communist state... other than china... (we'll get to them in a second)

2) the most "successful" parts of China are the parts that have ABANDONED "communist" ideals embracing "capitalism"... please dispute that fact...

the whole BASIS of "capitalism" is freedom and liberty, without the LIBERTY to freely express your ideas, you dont have the FREEDOM to make things better. if YOU dont make things better, your competitiion WILL.... and YOU will be out of business. plain and simple.

Comments made by the communists, you can always spot a communist or terrorist appeaser. Just look of the negativity and anti west views. They also never condemn the real enemy.

Well done Poland! The Polish know the truth about Russia - that it is an autocratic, territorially ambitious, aggressive state. Anything to stand up to Russian is good news for all of us.

"you're better off to have Russia as the enemy than the US as a friend" - well no actually, having the US as a friend tends to stop Russia from pursuing its territorial ambitions. If Georgia wasn't a US ally Putin wouldn't have stopped at South Ossetia.

"Could it be that we are far more successful than Democracy?"

Pm, in what way are you more successful than democracy? The fact that you lead the entire world in spreading infectious lung diseases? That you are the World's #1 supplier of the ever popular influenza virus every year? Or could it be that you have achieved the distinction of "the most people killed by the smallest earthquake" award?

So, its one thing to say that you are successful and it is something else entirely to point to what you are successful at. Or could it possibly be that you have surpassed the entire planet in "organs harvested from executed political prisoners"?

My purpose is not to attack you, pm, but simply to answer you in the same snarky and unsportsmanlike tone you used. In fact the Chinese Olympics have been a beautiful spectacle, and the Chinese people have appeared relaxed and friendly.

I don't know about Europe, but the Chinese and American people have always been on friendly terms and a modicum of mutual respect has existed since the first Chinese came to San Francisco in the middle of the 19th century. You, pm, seem to something of a provocateur. Why do you take every article and twist it into an 'us versus them" proposition? You are violating the spirit of the Olympics, which is to celebrate universal brotherhood of man through the auspices of the beauty of athletic competition.

If you care to continue with the jejune crowing, go on ahead. It doesn't put the best face on your country and it doesn't make you any friends. You need to be able to distinguish between a competitor and an enemy. Americans are raised on the notion that competition brings out the best in everyone. But, and this begins in grade (k-6) school, competition between schools begins. In sports, when the game is over, the players on each team huddle up and chant some variation of this:

"2, 4, 6, 8, who do we appreciate?" and then the name of the opposing school is shouted

"2, 4, 6, 8, who do we appreciate?" and then the name of the opposing school is shouted out, eg., "Hillview, Hillview, Raa, Raa, Raa!" The players then line up and shake hands with all of the players on the opposing team. In other words, we honor our competitors, we do not seek to have them killed.

Until China lifts the 800,000,000 million Chinese into conditions that do not require them to sleep in the same room as their pigs, then you can beat your chest a little more. The Chinese and American people are natural friends and have been for over a hundred and fifty years. A few loudmouthed ill mannered commies aren't going to change that.

There are only two things I want to say.

There is no such thing as weapons which are only defensive. Anyone who believes that kind of rhetoric is totally brainwashed. This is not tai chi.

There is not only one way of running a country and the west has to realise that if it wants to exist in a few years and to allow other countries to adopt their own ideology. God did not appoint the USA to be the propagator of its own brand of democracy.

Invading small countries, withdrawing vital energy supplies, or threatening neighbouring countries with nuclear annihilation. In this instance, the USA has chosen to be more subtle, but just as effective.

Superpower posturing.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but is Russia now a democracy (self-imposed) or still a communist state dressed up as a democracy? And has China not taken a similar stance over the FREE market? Ideology has indeed developed in a strange way.

You have stated an obvious similarity. The Russians put missiles 90 miles from Florida and the US puts missiles in Poland. Exactly the same, right? Wrong. The Russians were installing nuclear armed IRBM's in Cuba. The US and Poland are installing long range missile interceptors. It is interesting to note that the American interceptors are not armed, strange as that may sound.

So here we have Lian #11 comparing nuclear tipped Intermediate Range Ballistic Missiles (Cuba) with missiles that are harmless to humans (ok, if you want to split hairs, the little piece of metal that is the business end of the interceptor could conceivably survive re-entry and dent someones fender).

The American interceptors are nothing but slingshots, just faster. They pose no threat to anyone on the ground. They have no explosive warhead, none!! The Russians were installing nuked-up IRBMs aimed at our cities and we are installing unarmed, harmless, very expensive high-tech pea shooters.

Liam, you wouldn't purposely be trying to create the impression that because both systems have the word missile in them that one can assume that those missiles have the same characteristics would you? I think you are, at least I hope so.

For purposes of the back and forth on this forum it's a clever tactic and a good way to find out if your opponent has an analytical temperament. If you thought you were making a valid point, though, and missed the fact that your underlying assumption was faulty, that would be disheartening. I'm not that familiar with your posts but at least for today you and the Chinese guys came through with some provocative observations, however mistaken they might be.

Hey Rick, are you pals with PM? The reason I ask is that you are both leaning on the same thin reed. You are the one that is calling the missiles weapons. I would like to see you substantiate that by citing any supporting authorities. A weapon is an object used to to inflict injury on an enemy. A shield is an object used to prevent that injury.

Your claim that a shield and a weapon are the same thing defies common sense. The first question that comes to mind is this, if they are both the same then why are there two different words?

The statement "there are no defensive weapons" therefore is not supported by your argument so far. Will you please cite your evidence for this claim?

And back for a little more education for you, how much or many would 800,000,000 million be? I had no idea we had that many poverty stricken people. 800,000,000 times 800 million are a lot of people wouldn't you say, even for China.
You also keep forgetting that I lived on the North American Continent for 47+ years and I saw many times how "well" you treated the Chinese, and I've been to Europe enough times for work to see how the Europeans treated the Chinese.

baseball is a funny sport...

a pitcher only has so many pitches in his arm... then if he's lucky its his elbow that blows out, and he can get "tommy john" surgery and take the mound again in a year or so....
MLB teams are not about to let their top players "perform" out from under their control... that goes for players from other countries as well... and no player is going to jeopardize a guaranteed multi-million $ contract to go play for a gold medal...

that said, there are MINOR leaguers (matt laporta) who are on the various olympic teams, even the chinese catcher who laporta ran over has a contract in america. I'm not 100% behind laporta on that one, however THAT kind of play IS allowed in american baseball, "if you try to block the plate you better have your dentures FIRMLY glued in"

the chinese pitcher who drilled laporta in the head.... well, in america, trailing 9-1 that is a fight (even in little league)... followed by several chinese hitters getting drilled in the next half inning...

basketball is a little different, their careers are not nearly as precarious as baseball players are...

however if play got dirty (undercutting people while they are in the air) you'd see the "nicey-nice" american hoopsters resorting to some REALLY dirty play.... and they wouldnt play international ball any more... it just wouldnt be worth it...

for example in a "pool" game down by 20+ a guy fouled an american guard pretty hard, and talked some trash... next time down the floor, the guy who fouled had an "open" baseline jumper took it and LeBron James volleyball spiked his shot back at him and off his head... message sent... message recieved

whaddaya all think about the IOC investigating your female gymnasts....

you know if they can reasonably prove that those passports are fake... they lose the medals... funny thing rules are....

wonder if your government will give the medals to those who rightfully earned them?

sad part is, those girls will never live down what their government made them do...

yes they competed... and yes they won... but they cheated... and I dont think it was THEIR idea to cheat

If Russia ever did launch an attack on the West, which I doubt it will but let's deal with your hypothetical, there are a number of places in Scotland that would be primary military targets.

The naval base at Faslane, which contains all the UK's ICBMs, the naval dockyard at Rosyth, and RAFs Kinross, Leuchers and Lossiemouth. Primary economic targets would likely include Glasgow and Port Glasgow (for the remaining shipyards) plus anywhere with a major chemical works.

it certainly does cause tension and strain in relationship with those countries but, that, such a decision would cause that, must have been clear to the Americans,so what are they up to?if we follow the Americans we will all go to hell
