THE Prime Minister today backed a call from Tory leader David Cameron that MPs' expense claims should be published online as soon as they are put in to improve transparency.
After a wave of public anger over the disclosure of dozens of claims made by MPs, Gordon Brown said the system had to be "wholly fair", adding: "We must prove ourselves worthy of the public's trust."

He said MPs must apologise for mistakes made, rectify errors and reconstruct the system in a way that rebuilds public confidence in the political process.

Mr Cameron called for the Prime Minister to show greater leadership – by abolishing the £10,000 a year communications allowance and reducing the number of MPs in the Commons.

The mounting public furore over MPs' expenses dominated question time exchanges, with Mr Cameron repeatedly pressing Mr Brown to go further on immediate change and the Prime Minister stressing the need for independent scrutiny.

Mr Cameron said it was "time to wake up and see what's going on in the country", accusing Mr Brown of failing to show leadership on the issue, and insisting: "How can we bring about the change the country needs if we can't change ourselves."

Mr Brown said he was showing leadership by telling all sides they needed to act and he was sorry Mr Cameron had chosen to "divide" the House on the issue.

Challenged by Labour's Howard Stoate (Dartford) on how the Government should respond to "public anger" about MPs' expenses, Mr Brown said: "Our responsibility is to create a system of MPs' allowances that is transparent and will be seen by the country as wholly fair.

"We must prove ourselves worthy of the public's trust. We must apologise for mistakes that have been made. We must rectify all the errors that have happened. And we must reconstruct the system in a way that the public will see as building confidence in the political process.

"I believe the steps that were taken last night by the Members' Allowance Committee are the first and important steps in dealing with this matter for the whole of the House together."

Mr Cameron said: "The first word you said was the need for transparency.

"One thing we could do, pretty much right now, is to publish our expenses online, the moment we actually put in a claim.

"Shouldn't this happen online in real time and MPs from all parties should do this now."

Mr Brown said: "Yes. I understand that the MAC is looking at this issue.
"I think it is important that there is a transparent system – that when a claim is reported to the fees office, the fees office can then itself put that up on the internet...

"I hope that will be introduced as soon as possible.

"I hope every Member of the House will agree that if trust in politics dissipates or disappears then the whole political system cannot work properly.

"We all have a duty now to make sure that the agreements we come to and the independent reviews that are made are such that can restore confidence in the system.

"With regard to the proposal from the MAC last night, I think it is now very important as they have suggested that the receipts and payments over the last four years be scrutinised by a body that includes people completely independent of the political system.

"By doing that for all MPs over a period of four years we can show the public we have taken every action necessary to deal with any anomalies, to repair them and build the confidence that's necessary in the political system for the future.

"This is a matter all parties will want to be engaged in and it's important we do it now."

"Brown backs call for immediate publishing of expenses online". LMFA ... another wonderful piece of Northbritishman headline contortionism.

Rather than give Cameron the headline for suggesting it, they give it to Brown for his agreement, as he comes a p|ss-poor second (again and again and again...) in this unfolding story.

1 Yeah good point. We are just seeing a lot of knee-jerk reaction stuff here as Brown and Cameron jostle for position. What is needed is a complete step back to look at the big picture and deal with that.

There's none of them advocating that so far.

Hootsman to his defense once again. I see the Johston Press has some finacial difficulties. Oh Dear I wonder which of its Liebore chimps will be the next for voluntary redundancy.

Not to worry The Hootsman will sposor them into a lucrative political career as Liebore foot dragging WestMidden lobby fodder. Well there will by the looks of it be several vacancies. A few postal votes here and a few there should not be a problem finding them alternative work..

Brown seems to be being bounced around cluelessly as he bids to save his skin.

Given that he himself indulged in the worst of the excesses by claiming for an appartment in london only a few miles away from the gace and favour home we were paying for in his behalf with downing street, every time he opens his mouth you just think of his greed, arrogance and contempt for the electrate.

All of a sudden they're all falling over themselves to fix the "problem".
Why wasn't it a problem a month ago?
Could it be linked with Browns desperate attempts to keep MPs expenses secret for so long?

Why did it take the forceable publication of the expenses through FOI before it bacame a problem?

Would it be a problem today if Brown had been successful?

"Mr Cameron called for.......reducing the number of MPs in the Commons"

What did I tell you. When the Tories come to power the number of Scots MPs will be reduced, and what's the betting the reduction will be proportionally greater than in the rest of the UK.

And of coarse, there is the "West-Lothian Question". Cameron has alreadt said that he supports banning Scots MPs from voting on (perhaps even debating on) what are deemed to be "English Only" matters. The point is that Westminster decides what would be "English Only". Does that include Scottish Oil? What about Engalnd deciding NOT to build Nuclear Power Stations in England. What about European Fishing policy, now that the Scotland Fishing Industry has been decimated in favour of England and Spain.

The Tories solution to the "West Lothian Question" is likely to stifle Scotland's voice in the UK even more.

#12 For Scotlands Future

So you've developed a fictional set of actions by an as yet unelected government to arrive at a pre-determined conclusion?

Also I suppose that the fact that there are Scottish MP's in Westminster, who would have something to say about this reverse logic you describe, doesn't interfere with your staw man?

I'm certainly not a Cameron apologist, but to finish off with the European Fishing Policy as being some grand conspiracy of the most euro-sceptic mainstream party sounds silly.

smokey joe - a very accurate assessment.

Brown is struggling, and struggling badly. I assume it will eventually filter through to the media here.

How pathetic the Unionists are, squirming and slithering in the Westminster cesspit , now that they've been caught with their hands in the till. The sooner Scotland is free from these wasters, the better.

How come so many people who are all prone to making mistakes, mistakes in their favour I may add, are running the country? No wonder were all in such a mess when our so called politicians cant even fill in an expensee claim without getting it wrong.

I now know how a certain Lord of the Gutter was getting his booze, we were paying for it.
