The evil empire
EVEN within the tough inner-city environment of Glasgow's Shawlands Academy he had a reputation as the type of guy you didn't mess with. Baldy had a kind of presence around him - he commanded respect. He was bright enough and could have chosen any number of paths in life, but he was already heading down the wrong one. He often seemed about to fly off the handle, and other pupils were scared of him. He and his gang would take money or belongings off them, saying it was for "protection".
Pull of two cultures can create deadly tension
I SOMETIMES feel like a pair of 501s at the testing stage. Tugging on one leg, gently but steadily, is the machinery of capitalism and the West. On the other, the erratic yanking of a wild beast is pulling me back to my roots. Like many young Muslims living in Scotland I feel confused, a little lost, distressed and largely powerless to do anything about it.
Lethal scandal of early release
EVERY murder is a tragedy. But the horrific slaying of Kriss Donald will go down as one of the worst killings in Scottish criminal history. Snatched off the streets at random, he was beaten savagely then stabbed 13 times before being doused in petrol and set on fire, while still alive. "I'm only 15," Kriss begged his killers. "What did I do?" The answer: he did nothing. Another sickening factor in an already shocking crime.
Time to take the automatic out of early release
WHEN Imran Shahid went down for the brutal murder of Kriss Donald, down with him, I hope, went the last arguments for automatic early release. Shahid was sentenced to 30 months in February 2003 for assault to danger of life. He was released after nine months. Three months later, he went on to kill 15-year-old Kriss in one of the most violent and despicable murders of recent times.

Evil trio stalked the streets for white victim to murder
A SINGLE sentence illuminates the character of the brothers behind Scotland's most horrific racist murder. As Kriss Donald cowered face-down in the rear seat of the Mercedes in which he was abducted and repeatedly punched, Imran Shahid leaned over and said: "I'm Baldy. Nobody f***s with me."
Mother's outburst as emotions run high
THE mother of Kriss Donald shouted a torrent of abuse at the three convicted murderers of her son as they left court yesterday.
Now tranquil, the place where horror visited
IT IS an ordinary park bench, on a quiet footpath that runs by the River Clyde. Only a small memorial plaque hints at the horror which took place - one the words, engraved in black, try to conceal.
