Why cant they streamline the whole set up and combine passport, driving license and ID card into one document. We would then have the best of all worlds and administering it should be much cheaper.

I think its madness. What next, everyone will get a chip under the skin? Ouch, glad there is no serious talk of this here although George Bush would love to work on getting it here.

ID cards? No way!
1. I have never had the slightest problem proving who I am.
2. The vast majority of identity fraud will not be hampered by the existence of ID cards.
3. I don't trust this or any other government with masses of personal information about me. Governments have an insatiable appetite for information about the populace and their activities, preferences, habits and beliefs and the more information they get, the more they abuse it and use it as an instrument of control and oppression (as did King William when he had the Doomsday Book compiled)
4. This is a vast waste of money

Why do we need ID cards? I've obtained a mortgage, move around freely, buy things online, can rent a video, was able to buy booze when I turned 18, was stopped from buying booze before I turned 18, pay my taxes, can be given a pension prediction by a government that knows who I am, can be investigated by law enforcement officials and express myself in the ways that I feel are important.
What are they for?
Please let me know - and once you've done that, I'll tell you all the reasons why ID control plans make me sick to my stomach.

... oh, I forgot, they called it the Identity Cards Bill against all reasoned opposition which wanted the name to reflect the National Identity Register which is what this is all about. So, my question should have been 'Why do we need the NIR?'
