HEARTS and Hibs had to settle for a share of the spoils as they played out a goalless draw at Tynecastle today.
The first real chance of the match fell to Hearts with seven minutes on the clock and materialised when the ball broke kindly from Christian Nade to Andrew, who was out wide on the left. The little winger cut in to the box and unleashed a wicked effort that Yves Ma-Kalambay did well to push away with both hands at his near post to concede the corner.

When that was swung in by Larry Kingston there was never any danger of Hearts taking first blood as the big Belgian was off his line quickly and in the air to collect.

Five minutes later Hibs came close when Derek Riordan floated a cracking ball into the danger area where Chris Hogg was waiting. The Hibs defender saw his first effort come off Christos Karipidis but the ball landed for him again, only this time for Christophe Berra to come in with a brilliant blocking challenge which saw the ball spin behind for a goal kick.

Hearts almost got the breakthrough in 16 minutes when Christian Nade and Steven Thicot rose to meet Robbie Neilson's throw from the right, the Hearts striker appearing to get the vital final touch but although his header beat Ma-Kalambay but came back off the crossbar.

Then at the other end Steven Fletcher came close when O'Brien and Stevenson combined to tee him up for a left-foot shot, but he could do nothing to prevent his shot from drifting just wide of Janos Balogh's right-hand post.

They were then awarded a dubious free-kick when Michael Stewart was judged to have fouled Fletcher, but Derek Riordan's curling effort from the dead ball was straight down the throat of Balogh.

Ma-Kalambay was then forced to concede another corner when Kingston's right-foot drive caused all sorts of problems but Csaba Laszlo was forced into a reshuffle just seconds later when Thomson was forced to go off suffering from the after-effects of a head knock he'd taken in a clash with Van Zanten. The Jambos brought on Gary Glen in his place but the young striker was asked to play more of an attacking midfield role than immediately join Nade up front.

Thomson's withdrawal also meant changes in defence with Jonsson switching to left-back and Karipidis moving to the centre of defence but the Jambos had another go when Neilson sent a hopeful ball up the park and it was missed by Hogg, giving Glen hope but his effort went just wide of Ma-Kalambay's goal.

The Jambos created an opening just after the restart when Stewart played the ball into Nade and raced into the box waiting for the return. The striker chose to go it alone though and wasted the opportunity by firing weakly at Ma-Kalmabya.

They came even closer in 50 minutes when Jonsson cut the ball in from the left and Nade connected, only to see his low shot come off the base of Ma-Kalamabay's right-hand post.

With just under an hour gone Hibs escaped lightly when referee Calum Murray waved away claims for a penatly, despite Sol Bamba clearly leapt over Nade in to the box, landing the striker a blow on the back of the neck in the process.

The woodwork was to blame for the game remaining goalless when a great ball from Stewart fell perfectly for Glen and the young hitman was unfortunate to see his looping effort from 20 yards bounce back off the top of the crossbar.

The miss of the match came with 15 minutes left when Cesnauskis did well to set up Nade in the box but the big striker could only produce a poor effort that went high over the goal from just seven yards out when it looked easier to score.

Hearts: (4-5-1) Balogh; (r to l) Neilson, Jonsson, *Berra, Thomson (Glen 34); Kingston (Cesnauskis 53), Karipidis, Stewart, Palazuelos, Driver; Nade. Unused subs: Kello, Rapnik, Mole, Templeton, Brown.

Hibs: (4-4-2): Ma-Kalambay; (r to l) Van Zanten, Hogg, Thicot, *Stevenson; O'Brien (Shiels 71), Bamba, Murray, Johansson; Fletcher, Riordan. Unused subs: McNeil, Yantorno, Nish, Keenan, Rankin, Chisholm.

Usual stuff, too much flying aboot and not enough composure.

Hibs did well to keep Driver out for most of the game.

One 50/50 penalty shout, but the rest was "close your eyes and hope for the best"

Looks like we'll have to wait until Sunday to see some quailty football.

#6 Good on you for that. But disagree with almost everything else you've said. Three off the woodwork and you're claiming Hibs should have won?

You're still not good enough to win, even with our rearranged defence having to be rearranged mid-game. So much for your fabulous strikeforce, eh?

From the SFA to the British government with financial help from FIFA, the Red Cross, UNICEF, the UN, in fact, every major world-wide organisation is involved. Except UKIO of course...

Berra's performance should hasten his transfer out. He was the barrier that prevented Hibs from scoring despite, as the away team, having less chances. Also great last ditch tackle by Johnsson to stop Riordan being clean through.

Our two wide men, Johanson and O'brien were poor. I must admit that Hearts deserved to shade it. Murray was 100% as usual, Thicot and Hogg solid enough and Bamba put in a great shift. Again, it's all down to Mixu's formation and tactics - hope he changes it for next week!
PS Ashamed of the Tw*ts in our end for the minute silence. But to be honest it would probably still have happened if it were the other way round! One minutes' applause would be far safer in my opinion.

An outstanding performance from Stevenson who finally got his chance in central midfield. A much better player than Rankin in my opinion even if Rankin can get the occasional goal. At last, a performance from van Zanten who, for some reason, can only give that when faced by Driver. O'Brien contributes very little and Mixu has to accept that he is a mistake (Collins and Craig's). I would rather fill the space with a player who can win the ball and provide a proper service to the strikers, especially if Johansson is to be played wide right as he will get goals too.

The Gorgie Boys Are In Town,

Aguiar would have given us the cutting edge. It's obvious but if we had taken an early opportunity then a few more would have been scored. Just unlucky but at times when a bit of composure would mean the difference in front of goal. Strange day when we don't get a gift from the hobo keeper what's going on there!

Why did the minutes silence not surprise me, not a braincell between them the plicks that made the noise and that the're scum is the least that can be said.

2 points dropped today but confident going to the slum next week, at the very least a replay i think but can see a Hearts win as we seem to win there more than the hobos.
23

Silence of the Yams,

03/01/2009 15:45:02
How O'Brien lasted so long and JJ went the whole 90 only Mixu knows. At least we now know Steveson and Bamba is the best central pairing. Hertz never looked that threatening, one long rangf shot and fat boy was never beating Makalambay with the one that skiffed the crossbar. I'm confident we can win the cup game as long as Mixu keeps Stevenson and ditches AOB. Ps Yams, how bad is Kingston? lol!!!

Hearts missed aguiars quality no doubts , having said that we were never in any danger of losing to the vermin and with a wee bit more composure it could have ended up a rout for us , never mind theres always next week where i fancy us to come out on top . 1-2 a fozzy type spectacular will do nicely ..

Hibees - you can smell your relief at sneaking out with a point. Still 5 points (potentially 8) behind us though. Still, look on the bright side - maybe Falkirk can save you dropping out the top 6 today.

Meanwhile both DU and Dons losing so could still turn out not to be too bad a day for us.

#27 Interesting that someone called "bringthemon" was quoted as contributing on the Beeb's text commentary. Obsessed with us, so he is.

Not a bad 0-0 but to be honest thought the Jambo's just shaded it . Thought our front 3 were gash & neither of them showed any composure especially AO'Brian who will never make it . How ironic that Makalamby has an excellent game ?? Bamba,Stevenson & Murray were also good as was DVZ & Hogg but forwards were very poor . We are crying out for a playmaker who is over 22 years old .. Think the cup tie could also be a draw "doh ! ...Although the minutes silence was a bit marred at the end I've heard a lot worse & don't know why it wasn't a minutes applause .. Apologies Jambos but like you we also have our share of "goats" ...
30

Furlock,

Capital City 03/01/2009 16:16:31
24 Tosss him off - nothing to do with bottle, fudd, just application - from Nade and Kingston who looked totally disinterested.

Berra was a rock and if that's his last game for us then he's signed off on a high. Jonsson also outstanding utility player who looks more comfortable at LB than Wallace... Neilson put in a good shift, as did Glen, but Stewart and Ruben's distribution was apalling.

Agree with Mixu (!) - fair play Hibees condemning the idiots who booed during minute silence. Also surprised with yellow for Berra - for being face-planted by Murray after a 50-50 challenge? And non-yellow for Fletcher's persistent fouling. It only takes one foul by Miko to get him booked for persistent fouling. Bamba was Hibs MOTM - JJ looks like he's lost 3 yards of pace.

2 points dropped, but confident for next week! HHGH

31

GrahamH,

Nade - 1 goal in about 30 games. It's now the 4th transfer window that supporters have been screaming for some real strikers and all fallen on Romanovs deaf ears - importing a few duff strikers with little real ability does not count.

32

Weel Kent Jambo,

03/01/2009 16:35:34
Uh oh...Killie equalise and it's sweaty palms time for the Hibees. Dons go 2 down (also good) but the Arabs equalise (not so good).
33

GeorgeCowieOrWalterKidd?,

03/01/2009 16:50:55
Just in from the game. Bossed midfield and created more than enough chances to score. That's the poorest, most disjointed Hibs team I've seen for a long time so two points dropped for us. I don't think their new messiah "JJ" (is this Hibs cost-cutting - can't afford all the letters of his name?) doing anything of note.

Hit wordwork three times, very strong penalty shout and 2 or 3 clear shooting chances that either went straight to the goalie or missed (Nade's being the worst). Positives were Jonsson, Driver (again) and Glen looked lively when he came on. Good option behind Nade up front. Stewart was poor and Ruben took a long time to settle. Nade should have scored but his general link up and holding the ball up play was good. On the whole, a good performance with a lack of cutting edge again and proof again that Shabba definitely knows what he's doing tactics and formations wise.

I think we can play without Aguiar, Zali and Kingston if these players are sold. We must keep Driver at all costs though.

By the way, does anyone know what George Miller did to Hibs to deserve the disruption to his minute's silence? Usually there's a few eejits shouting or something but there was very loud booing from Hibs fans as it started - almost as if it was planned. They were shouted down by other HIbs fans and Jambos. But it then resumed intermittently. Did Miller score against them or something? Either way - very poor show from Hibs fans. At least maybe now they'll finally stop claiming the moral highground for everything though! They're no better or worse than any other group of fans.

Also, since when did Nade look like Eddie Murphy or is it just because he's black? May as well call Mixu a "Fat Tom Cruise" if colour and being large is all that matters??!

#34 Not sure whether to be happy or sad on that result. As you say good to stop the Weegies winning but puts 3rd place out of our immediate grasp (unless we beat Murderwell 10-0 midweek!).

37

BazJT,

03/01/2009 17:17:16
Considering the lack of options up front, which will hopefully be sorted in the transfer window, I thought this was a pretty positive effort from us. If Aguiar was playing instead of Palazuelos I think we would have horsed them.

I think stats will show that we were better in every department. How Fletcher, and to a lesser extent Stevenson, stayed on the pitch for the entire 90 minutes beats me although I have to say the ref did his best to keep the game flowing so deserves credit there. The linesman or 4th official who decided on two bookings deserves no praise whatsoever. Nonsense.

I also think Nade deserves more credit than he's getting. His strength and holding up of the ball are excellent. Looked much better with Glen to play alongside.

If i was a hibs supporter, thankfully not !!, I'd have some pretty grave misgivings about Mixus lack of tactical nuance.

#35, Cue the Churchill dog......Oooh yes!

There's going to be a bit of shuffling around in the next couple of weeks with the postponed games being played. Motherwell could come into the equation with a win over Hearts ;-) and I think Killie will beat the Dons, which will put them 2 above us. However, the next full programme on the 17/18th looks to be loaded in Hibs favour

Just a few words:

Both teams stunk, if Hibs were offered 2.5 mil for Fletcher, take the money and run.

Hearts could sell any 3 players and who would notice, very few stood out and some for the wrong reasons. It is obvious that Nade's time is up, put youth in the game they might not score either but at least they will try.

I agree. That's the first decent performance I've seen from a ref ina long time. He'll probably get pelters by the SFA for not booking enough players.

Still think you're being a bit harsh with some of the players though. Hibs were niggly from start to finish, difficult circumstances to play football. Palas distribution was pretty awful at times, not like him at all.

Not bad for a 0 - 0 Hearts should probably have won.

Hearts best - Berra (star man), Karapidas, Jonsson, Nielson and Driver
OK - Balogh, Glen, Nade (despite some woefull finishing)
Poor - Palez, Stewart and Kingston (despite winning every header against Murray)

Hibs best - Makalamby(star man!!!!) Bamba (!!!!!) Hogg, Stevenson.
The rest were at best average.

Replace Stewart (please) by Aguiar and give Kingston another chance with Chesny waiting if he does not deliver.
Predict a 1 - 0 victory or at worst 1 - 1 and a replay.

Finally referee kept game flowing however Fletcher should have been booked, Stevenson very lucky to stay on park and Berra should never have been booked

If any Hearts fans come on saying that Hibs supporters are as bad then there's no need because I know that. They too should be ashamed of themselves.

As to the game. Hearts won the midfield and had most of the pressure. Hibs strikers were on their own. Isolated. They have to make their own chances and can't look to the midfield for any help.

And yet...wWe have good midfield players who are consistently unable to make an impression in games because the team operate as 4 seperate units.

Goalkeeper: Its good that he has stopped frightening Jones but look at the number of times he tries to throw the ball out but has to stop because there is no one to receive it.

Defence: No Jones. No good. DVZ coping with Driver and covering for Hogg. Hogg made a few good tackles but generally kept out of the way. Thicot suffered from being on his own in a twin centre back defence. Murray, a bit dodgy defensively on occasion but good coming forward.

Midfield: Yantorno must have really offended Mixu. He is the type of player who likes to, and has the ability to, take charge of the midfield and make the play. Sheils did well when he came on.

Attack: It's time Riordan and Fletcher were introduced to each other.

Hibs could have lost this game and we couldn't have complained to much.

Watched today's "entertainment" and ,frankly, pretty poor stuff from both teams. HMFC had more of the play but their final third movement and finishing was poor : Glen made a difference, Nade is hopeless.

A few positives for Hibs : keeper, Bamba, Stevenson and DVZ were stand outs but JJ looked unfit and we lack the killer edge.

In essence, same for both teams - plenty of endeavour but broadly journeymen with no class and / or organisation - DUFC are a far superior footballing team to both the Edinburgh teams.

I was embarrased by the behaviour of some (assume Hibs' "fans") at the beginning. Mindless.

For the cup next week - I will be there and we will prevail - would like to see 4-4-2 formation with Makalamby : DVZ Jones Hogg Murray : Bamba Stevenson Shiels JJ : Fletcher Riordan. Plenty of attacking panache there and good physical holding and industrious midfield and defence.

As the kick-off was delayed because Boruc was in some toilet, DU could appeal to have the result overturned, and be awarded all three points (3-0)

What about the monkey chants at nade after his miss surely this is racial abuse? If the OF are that minuscule in terms of top clubs in the world (and we are) what does that say about the rest of Scottish football. As poor as you think the OF may be, they have both reached a European in the last 6 years. If the OF had the financial resources of EPL clubs (tv money) and with their support would be far ahead of the likes of Fulham, Wigan Boro etc.

By Mark Howarth, 03/01/2009

THE future of crisis club Hearts hinges on an aluminium ore factory in Bosnia, we can reveal.

Despite the club’s owner Vladimir Romanov having an extensive global business empire, the Birac plant in Zvornik is the jewel in his crown.

And last night it emerged that the huge chemical works is being badly hit by the worldwide credit crunch.

A senior financial analyst warned: “This could have a serious knock-on effect for the situation at Hearts.”

The smelters at Birac can churn out 600,000 tonnes of alumina — which is used to make aluminium — annually.

But with worldwide demand for new cars drying up, metal prices have slumped — and production at the plant has been SLASHED to 350,000 tonnes.

Birac — owned by Romanov’s Ukio Bankas Investment Group (UBIG) — recently reported a loss of £65million.

And last July it announced it was laying off 245 workers from its 1,400-strong workforce.
