HOME now to student accommodation, the Tun building and, eventually, the Scottish Parliament, Holyrood Road used to look very different.

This image from The Scotsman archives was taken sometime in 1928 - the exact date is unfortunately unclear.

The horses in the foreground are pulling carts loaded with beer barrels.

At the time the photo was taken, there were at least 20 breweries in Scotland, including John Aitchison & Co. Ltd. at the Canongate Brewery, 21 Holyrood Road.

In the 1920s, the WM Younger brewery had installed a bottling plant in the Holyrood Brewery, which eventually closed in 1986.

As well as the beer barrels, washing can be seen hanging from pulleys at the windows .
