Richard Branson brought a smile to the faces of young patients when he dropped in on the Royal Hospital for Sick Children.

And on the day when he launched his own radio station – April 30, 1993 – the millionaire businessman made a special broadcast to the hospital: “Get well soon, kids.”

The flamboyant airline and record shop boss was just what the doctor ordered for poorly youngsters in ward two, who beamed with delight when he stopped for a bedside chat.

Edinburgh was Mr Branson’s first port of call on a Britain-wide tour to launch Virgin 1215, the first national commercial rock radio station.
