Andrew Smith: Can the Africa Cup of Nations disentangle itself from off-field politics?

ONLY one of the winners from the past nine championships, Tunisia, will be competing in the latest Africa Cup of Nations. Consequently a number of the “daddy” teams from the continent – Egypt, Nigeria, South Africa and Cameroon, will not. Meanwhile, three new entrants will take their bow: co-hosts Equatorial Guinea, Niger and Botswana. The tournament then, despite being 45 years old, has a young feel to it. Which shouldn’t stop us being grown up about it. Not when Africa has matured enough for a measure of parity to be sought with standards elsewhere.

‘Independent’ report into Hearts stadium was by fan

A FRESH row has broken out over a bid by Heart of Midlothian FC to persuade Edinburgh City Council to build the club a new stadium after it emerged one of Heart’s own shareholders had written a controversial report supporting the idea.

Gary Mackay: We need quality in squad not quantity

It’s extremely hard to get too excited about the future of the club while it’s in such a state of flux. Everybody’s hoping things take a positive turn, but this sort of stuff doesn’t sort itself out overnight, especially with the concerning level of debt we have.
