TOO many words and not enough action is being used to tackle alcohol abuse in Scotland, medics in Edinburgh have said.
The British Medical Association has urged the Scottish Government to implement legislation and practical action rather than hard-hitting messages.

Dr Peter Terry, the organisation's chairman, said doctors were in the best position to judge how alcohol affects people's lives.

He said: "Doctors witness first-hand how alcohol misuse destroys lives. The facts are simple – voluntary measures implemented by the drinks industry are not effective and do not reduce the damage of alcohol misuse in Scotland."

It is NOT time for tough action on alcohol. It is time to start treating people like adults and enforcing EXISTING laws.

The things that Dr Terry alludes to are concern a MINORITY of people. It is about time that the powers that be woke up to that simple fact and started directing their efforts at those people, rather than the overwealming majority who cause no problems whatsoever.

What we have too much of in this country is doctors with too little to do but hector people. They're just the garage mechanics of the body and are there to fix what's broken. We wouldn't stand for it if the Garage Mechanics Association hectored us about our driving and neither should we pay attention to the rantings of unemployed medics.

Retraining them as car mechanics would be a mercy.

If doctors are serious about this, then they need to look at receiving training and then delivering Brief Interventions. It will make a significant shift in population alcohol consumption but most / all GPs will need to do it - it only takes 5 minutes but has to be done right.
