SUN-WORSHIPPING Scots are risking skin cancer by using moisturiser, baby oil and even chip fat instead of protective cream, researchers said today.
A survey said that unhealthy sunbathing habits are to blame for Scots having the highest risk of skin cancer in the UK.

One in five polled admitted to "binge" tanning, and a quarter said they used lotions with lower than recommended protection of SPF 15 or higher.

Four out of 10 Scots also admitted experimenting with their own sun lotions, such as cooking oils and moisturiser.

Laura Wilson, a spokeswoman for The Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain, who commissioned the YouGov survey, said: "This is a serious issue. I am worried that people still think the warnings about the sun do not apply to them.

"Scots tend to think they do not need to use sun creams at home but people must respect the sun at all times and make sure they use a recommended sun protection cream."

In other Words!, Who can Afford to spend £10.00, for Sun Cream Protection, to cover their little toe?
We do care about our Health!!, It is of about time the 'rip-off', we have to pay to protect ourselves from our sun, was addressed!

Hi Charles~
Yes, sunscreen is expensive, but skin cancer carries an even higher price.

It depends on your skin and a lot of other factors.

It is possible to buy adequate sunscreen cheaply Charles, here's a link to a Which magazine survey, they recommend 3 best buys each under £3. Not a fortune and when you consider the protection it gives against potentially life threatening skin cancer, very good value i'd say.

I run a research fund trying to secure a promising trial treatment for malignant melanoma, the most serious and agressive form of skin cancer, and I know how the disease can play out. It's not pleasant.People need to be more aware of the dangers and take precautions when out and about in the sun including wearing a high spf sunscreen.

For anyone who wants more information on malignant melanoma or to help fundraise for the trial treatment our website is www.factor50.org.uk
