Went in here with my Girlfriend in November, both students, thought we would give it a try as it was close by.
First of all the owner kicked off a fuss about us ordering tap water and we could here him shouting and mouthing off in the background.
The food then came out and when asked how it was afterwards, I said politely "quite dissapointing to be honest" as it genuinley was terrible and i wouldn't have paid £3 for the burger and chips we got out of a burger van, let alone £7 (it must have been bad for two hungover students to not enjoy). With hindsight, we should have complained before we ate the food but we we felt intimidated so we never.
We were then told to "go and F*** ourselves" repeatedly.
"Your must be English, go and f*** yourselves."

You can make up your own mind.

I don't have much to add to my husband's review, cited below.  Read the Trip Advisor reviews, we're not the first to be treated so poorly here.  For legal reasons, I won't name him as Edinburgh's Ice Cream N***, but if you've seen Seinfeld's Soup Nazi, you can meet the Italian version of that character here in Newington.  We were fairly regular customers here, had never encountered this horrible man before.

I am a frequent customer at many businesses in & around Newington/Nicholson/Clerk St. and Causewayside and am always treated with respect, courtesy and in some cases friendship. This is a first for me.  I was in tears walking home.

From Daryl W:
Absolutely the worst experience I've had in nearly 2 years living in Edinburgh.  My wife and I popped in for some ice cream after dinner, and the middle-aged gentlemen was downright rude to us.

My wife asked to sample one of the flavours, and he refused.  He was happy to take a sample himself and tell her how delicious it was, but he refused to give her a taste of a new flavour.  Then, he proceeded to say things like "you're a liar, you must be American" and "go back to America" when she commented that she'd been here before.  The irony was not lost on me that he is also from another country.

I don't know what his emotional problem was tonight, but suffice it to say we'll not darken this doorstep again.  We live just around the corner and have visited before...but not again.  I feel sorry for his staff.

It really saddens me to write this review. The food at Nyam Nyam is great, very tasty. But the portion sizes are small and I feel overpriced.

However this is the least of Nyam Nyam's problems. It has the worst customer service of any place I have ever eaten in Edinburgh. Say hello to my huge list of problems:

- No bread with your meal.
- The toilet wasn't working.
- No pepper. (are you kidding, your an italian restaurant)
- Flat fizzy water. When we complained, the chief was very aggressive asked a customer who turned out to be one of his friends to test it, then said there is nothing wrong with the fizzy water. He said that italian fizzy water is less fizzy than scottish fizzy water. What a lie, I have been to Italy and there water is plenty fizzy.
- Okay how about tap water then? No tap water, if you want water you have to pay. We bought still water, but I am 99% sure this was a refilled bottle as the plastic seal on the lid was already broken. So yes you do get tap water that they try to pass off as bottled water, and you have to pay for. Ridiculous.
- A friend came to join me for lunch but didn't want to eat, the waiter said that he could not stay if he was not ordering something, ARE YOU KIDDING, so rude.
- At this point I'd had enough of the hostile staff that I left without finishing my tasty, yet tiny lasagna. I really wasn't happy at all so went to complain to the owner who was incredibly rude.

I am a relaxed person and it takes a lot to make me complain, this place is going to go out of business in the next 6 months if it doesn't sort it's customer service out. I am going to tell everyone I know not to eat there. It really was the most dreadful service I have ever experienced, I felt physically threatened by their aggressive staff.
If you don't believe me by all means do go and try the place, but when you realise how much it sucks get online and review it so others know to AVOID.

I visited to Nyam Nyam Italiano (or Trattoria as it seems to be called now) on 3rd July 2012 with a friend. We were seated promptly and given menus by a waitress who almost smiled at us (this is where they get the star!).

We had not seen each other in a while and were there to catch up. Unfortunately, the man in the kitchen had other plans and decided to come to the front of the counter shouting and swearing about somebody he worked with, to the point that we could barely hear each other. One of my best friends is Italian and to witness the full force of a rant in Italian can be a very interesting experience as I am intrigued by different languages and very much enjoy finding a hint of culture in Newington. Unfortunately, this guy was swearing and shouting in the strange Scottish accent he has picked up which is something I could have witnessed at home.

The food was quite nice but in all honesty the experience can be easily replicated by buying dry pasta and a pot of Jamie's tomato sauce and cooking it at home. This would be a lot cheaper and apparently would involve much less hassle.

The menu is relatively expensive for just being pasta in sauce (£6.50 for penne pasta with pesto is rather ridiculous!). However, when we arrived we were told it was 20% off all pasta, pizza and risotto. Unfortunately for us, the waitress was not particularly good at mathematics. Our food should have cost £5.20 (£6.50 minus 20%) each and seeing as we had both ordered tap water we were expecting a bill of £10.40. The real bill was brought over and slammed down in front of us by the angry chef before we had even thought about asking for it. I was planning on ordering ice cream too but was not given the chance and didn't much feel like staying after our experience. The bill was £13.20 as the waitress had come to the conclusion that we should pay £5.60 for our meals (roughly 14% off) and charged us "service" of £1 each because we had both ordered a tap water!?

By this point I had given up on disputing. We paid and we left. We will not be returning.

I am addicted to the pizza from this place, luckily this place is on my street and I can order Edinburgh's best pizza to my hearts content. A million times tastier than the more expensive neighbouring Pizza Hut, Papa John's and Dominoes! I've heard good things about the rest of the menu, and they now offer a 10% student discount as well as doing a lunchtime deal. Takeaway or sit in, Nyam Nyam serves up good, honest food for more than reasonable prices.  Relaxed, friendly, cheap and delicious, I can't fault it.

The minute we entered to the restaurant , we got a really scary look from a man , i think he is the owner or maybe the chef! I am not sure what was the look about , maybe because we had a buggy?! anyway no one approached us , we had to go ask if you could take a seat.

All of the above did not really matter we were excited to get some authentic italian food. we ordered a garlic focaccia as a starter
a chicken mushroom pizza
and a salmon pasta
and tap water.

i gotta say the pizza base is delicious , but the topping was average , one you can get in ay other pizza shop.

the garlic focaccia tasted like plain bread!!!! it didnt even have a hint of garlic nor butter , so that was disappointing.

the pasta was supposed to be creamy , but is wasnt and you can hardly taste the salmon ,mmm i am not sure it was salmon .

Oh and i i never thought i would say this , but tap water in cheap SMALL PLASTIC cups for adults is just an insult!!!!!!!!

I gotta say something positive though , the woman (i would imagine she is the owner too) who served us was very friendly with a nice smile .
the prices are average too so thats a plus.

Forget pizza hut and Domino’s with their lack of decent toppings. This place is run by an Italian Family who are the masters of pizza and pasta! We’re talking a large pizza for £6 with lots of toppings, well worth what you pay. The base is lovely, thin and crusty. Portion size is superb and such value for money. Great atmosphere. I highly recommend their mozzarella, Parma ham and tomato salad. They also do lovely ranges of paninis, rissotto, pastas and calzone’s! Highly recommend!
