excellent day tour with Russell, who keeps you entertained all day with stories and Scottish history. Loved the music as well - we had some wonderful photo opportunities and can thoroughly recommend both this tour and the lovely pies at the main bakery in Callendar (we tried the steak, scotch and rhubarb) - so yes it was us who ate all the pies lol!!
We couldn't see the Forth Bridge on the way out of Edinburgh, so Russell took us to see it properly on the way back - a great way of seeing a lot of the highlands but you also spend quite a bit of time off the bus - Loch Katrine was great, the view from the William Wallace monument was amazing - we had a brilliant day! - can't recommend this trip enough - we want to go back to see more of the Highlands!
If you get to Deacon Brodie's cafe early for a bit of breakfast when waiting for the tour, try the raspberry jam - it's amazing !

We took the Free Hairy Coo Highland Tour. I can only agree with all the comments above: It was amazing. First of all, it's based on the "tips only" business model, so perfect for us as sutdents who cannot afford to spend 50 quid for a bus tour we don't even like in the end. So this is why we (5 girls, two of them Edinburgh-based) booked for a Saturday in January.
From the first minute onward, we were sure we would love it. Donald is a superb guide who knows a lot about Scottish history and, of course, everyday life and is not afraid to tell you all about it. So allthough the tour includes a good deal of sitting on the bus (or rather, Irene), this part was not boring for one single second. The length of the stops are adjusted to the weather and personal wishes of the group. You can look up the stops online, I (having been to the Highlands before) have to say it is an excellent choice for a single day tour. My personal highlights: Looking at the two bridges over Forth in the early morning mist, enacting Monty Python's Holy Grail while clapping coconuts in front of Doune Castle, having lunch in a cosy little tea room in Aberfoyle (I think it was called Wee Blether), a wonderful walk around Loch Katrine, and, of course, the feeding of the Highland cows (beware of their horns!).
I recommend The Hairy Coo to everyone who is staying in Edinburgh for longer than a single day, since you have not been to Scotland untill you've seen the Highlands and fed a hairy coo!

BOSS TOUR – the best thing we did in Edinburgh without a doubt. GREAT idea to make it free – you don’t mind paying for such a great day. Recommend booking in the dy before as the bus was full and people were turned away. DO THIS

Cannot recommend this highly enough. Think earlier reviewers have said it all, great day out with Russell on Irene informative and fun. Started out on a rainy day in February which brightened up to lovely winter sunshine which added to the day, but this would have still been a fun day out if it had stayed grey! A “must do” if spending a few days in Edinburgh.

This tour is the best………….I cannot recommend it enough. I went on the tour on my first trip to Edinburgh and was blown away by the professionalism, fun and wealth of knowledge by Donald our driver and tour guide. I returned again but missed out as the tour was fully booked. I was so disappointed………. If you go to Edinburgh, you must do the tour….its the only way to see Scotland at its best. Well done Hairy coo……..I am booking early next time.

I took this tour along with my partner (we’re both Scottish) and three German friends. It was in a word, BRILLIANT! A totally fun day out, great way for tourists to see some of Scotlands wonderful scenery and a fab little catch up on some of our history for me- I’d love to say I knew it all already but suprise suprise – I didn’t! And even if I had, hearing it all from Russel with his own special brand of humour added in would still have been most entertaining! I cannot reccommend this trip highly enough. A great wee company, love love love what they are doing :) I’m just waiting for more visitors so I can go again!

Read what everyone else says here, as everyone who’s been on a Hairy Coo tour can only tell you how great the tour was! Our tour guide Russell was both professional and courteous, and he clearly had a passion for Scottish culture and history. The value of this trip is not just the beautiful sights, but the anecdotes, both great and small imparted upon you, the tourist. I came back to America with a unique insight on Scotland, and I love sharing with my friends everything I learned on the Hairy Coo bus tour. By the end of the tour I wish I could have paid more!

I took the Hairy Coo tour this past May (2011) and it was wonderful! Donald was an amazing guide and the scenery was truly beautiful. Besides the fantastic landscapes, we got up close and personal with some hairy coos that Donald was able to lure to the side of the field with some carrots. They’re adorable and worth the trip all on their own. When we booked this trip, I had some doubts about how great it would be since the price was however much you felt like giving them at the end. I don’t think that I could have truly appreciated the value of the experience had they priced it for me and I regret that I didn’t have more cash on hand when our trip was over but it really was one of those priceless experiences. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone who is going to Scotland, or anywhere in the UK for that matter – its worth it even if you have to go out of your way!
