IF ANYONE harboured doubts about Eddie May being his own man, they must have been dispelled this week. Quiet he may be but he can still verbalise an assassination. In a flurry of not-so-friendly fire, the man who has been promoted from within at Falkirk suggested he had not been impressed with much of what he has witnessed at the club over the past few years and claimed he was delighted with the timely expiration of a clutch of first-team players' contracts.
A spy within, he says he is delighted his former position in charge of the Falkirk youngsters allowed him to keep tabs on the first-team players and was happy to be off-loading a number of them this summer.

"It's a blessing in disguise. Without go
ing into too much detail, if some people had been in contract I'd have been scratching my head but I've been very fortunate. One or two will be retained but there's a lot who will not," he said when he was unveiled as Hughes' successor earlier this week. The new man at the helm, he wasn't exactly preoccupied with the notion of playing it safe.

"Football's about opinions and I've been very fortunate because our under-19s train alongside our first team and I see these guys – I see them every day. They act differently when the manager's there and they act differently when I'm there. I know exactly what they're about. That's what I'll make my decision on."

While Hibs target Dani Mallo and one or two others will be courted in the hope they will sign new deals, a number have already been told to start seeking employment elsewhere. Steve Lovell has been told he will not be offered a new deal, while Kevin McBride, Mark Staunton and Scott Gibb have also been shown the door.

Dutchman Gerard Aafjes has decided to remain in the Netherlands for family reasons, Dean Holden has signed for Shrewsbury and Michael Higdon has joined Scottish Premier League rivals St Mirren.

"Stevie (Lovell] could only train twice a week and play on Saturday. That hampered him and his confidence," said May. "It's my job to find a better player, and I'm confident I can do that."

Refusing to honour the gentlemen's agreements reached by his predecessor with some of those seeking new terms, he said he had no qualms about discarding them.

"I've made an attempt to keep the people I think are appropriate to the football club. So we'll see what their answer is. I'm quite positive about the ones I want to keep. The ones I don't want to keep will already know so they're now looking for other football clubs.

"Maybe John will take them to Hibs, and that would be appropriate. If John's offered them something verbally, then he's no longer the manager of Falkirk Football Club, he's the manager of Hibs, so we'll see if he takes them there! Any players who, under the previous manager, received a verbal agreement, it doesn't matter, he's different from me. I've got my opinions on players."

A lot of opinions on a lot of things and none of them wishy-washy. A man who said he took a few days to mull over the pros and cons of foregoing the relative security of his role as Academy director for the precarious position of SPL manager and claimed that his desire to remain out of the spotlight was another factor in that indecision, he had no qualms in setting out his stall. There was no pulling his punches.

Having written off many of the players brought into the club by Hughes, he also criticised the impotency of the football produced last term which saw Falkirk avoid relegation on the final day of the season. The problem was the team didn't get in enough crosses, didn't score enough goals, didn't defend well enough and didn't play to their capabilities.

"I don't think the league table lies. The position we finished in is the position we deserved to finish. It's a hard job, a difficult job. If it was that easy I'd be laughing but it's not. It's a hard, hard job I'm going to take over. There are a few challenges in there but I'm a positive person and I'm sure we can go to a decent level."

It was surprisingly big talk for a man two minutes into the job. Especially as all clubs will be cutting budgets to cope with the recession as well as the lack of Setanta revenue. It will mean May seeking new personnel on a budget far smaller than last season. The man who brought Scott Arfield, Tam Scobbie et al through the ranks is unperturbed. "I believe in what I do and what I've already put in place, structure-wise and football-wise at the club. I'll just enhance that again. I did that when the under-19s first came into the first-team environment and they were better for it so I'll go back to the training which I think's appropriate for professional footballers. There is no use in having a facility if you're not going to use it."

Egged on to take the job by Owen Coyle, his real role model will not be any of his former team-mates or gaffers, it will be Saint-Etienne, a club he visited as part of his Academy Directorship course. "I went to Saint-Etienne and met a guy called Damien Comolli who used to be at Tottenham. A fantastic person and a fantastic football club. It inspired me. That's how a football club should be run.

"Not like the old style management that one manager runs a club from top to bottom. What does he know about business – not a single thing? He's got a hard enough job doing the football part, then all of a sudden he wants to interfere with every single thing. I don't think that's appropriate. The only thing that should ever change at a football club, and which will change at Falkirk, is the manager and his two assistants. That way you have continuity consistently."

Celtic could have signed him if mowbray had wanted him. The player's agent stated that Celtic were his preferred choice but that it would all come down to money.

Hull must have offered him more than Celtic were prepared to offer. In the last few weeks, we've got Naka, Venegoor and Balde off the wage bill which would free up over £75k a week. We could take on a £40k a week player just now if we wanted...Mowbray can't be satisfied that Fortune is that good. It would have been a bigger gamble for Celtic than it is for Hull, but I'm sure we could have matched them if Mowbray had wanted.

BTW....Steve Bruce is about to offer £5m for Davis , so once you add the £10m champions league money to that, rangers will have the opportunity to reduce their debt to around the £20m mark.

I'm not sure that Eddie May was too impressed by John Hughes when he was theres.

Although EM says that he is coming into a difficult job *It's a hard job." I'm not conveinced that he understands how hard it's going to be.

His main strategy it seems is to change the team around with different personnel so that Falkirk get more crosses into the box and therebye score more goals.

Good luck to the guy but he should stop sniping at John Hughes.

Celtic did want to sign him and his agent said that Celtic was his preferred choice.

However, his agent also said that it would depend on the who came up with the best financial package. Celtic, evidently, were not willing to offer as much as Hull.

Hull are a premiership side, but I doubt they'll be offering more than £40k a week. That's about the upper limit for low ranking premiership sides. Exceptionally, they might go a bit higher than that but only for a big name, and Fortune doesn't qualify for that.

At the moment, Celtic COULD take on a £40k a week player...it's only £12K added on to what Balde was getting. The only conclusion is that mowbray doesn't think Fortune is worth that kind of money...mabey mowbray thinks he could get a better player for the same money.

BTW

I wouldn't want to pay much more than £10k a week for a 27 year old Nancy player who's done 5 months in the premiership.
If Hull are willing to pay £40k a week , they're welcome to him to be quite honest.

Well, that kinda makes b*llocks of your other pearl of wisdom to the effect that...

"Celtic could have signed him if mowbray had wanted him."

Clearly not.

#6 You must try to understand that there is more to making a life changing decision than just money. Even if Celtic could match or beat Hulls' offer the player would take advice on Celtic. He would want to know more about them than just the money on offer.

He obviousy asked. He was obviously told. Then he signed for Hull.

Balde's away but he's taken his £1 million "loyalty bonus" with him. And I wasn't aware Hesselink had left Parkhead....

Noone knows what if any loyalty bonus balde received.
Celtic have an option to keep Venegoor for another season but as yet have not done so (Hoorah!).
If I had a hat I would offer to eat it in the event that Mowbray elects to retain him.....I think we can safely say that big jan's played his last game in the hoops.

Balde got his loyalty bonus to the tune of 120k a month for the last couple of seasons. lol

Anything else he got is gravy.

I think you might be confusing Celtic with Scotland's Shame.

11

I have no idea what Celtic offered him, but I agree that it must have been a lot less than hull offered.
But as I said, I'm quite glad about that...looking at his age and career profile, who would want to be paying him what is for Celtic absolute top dollar ?
Nae chance ! There are only two players believed to have had £40K a week contracts at Celtic , Henrik and Gravesen.

Gravesen turned out to be useless (apart from scoring two goals against rangers), but his career profile matched the wage which Celtic agreed with him.

Fortune is 27, he plays with a fairly minor French side, he's had 5 months in the prem with a minor EPL side. I think he is at most a £15k a week player which could have performance linked incentives to bring it up to around £20k a week. That's as far as I'd have gone for a player with his CV.

Brian I don't think that there's much doubt that Celtic were in for him. It reads as though it all came down to cash and Celtic weren't prepared to match the terms Hull offered to him.

In today's economic SPL market for a club to pay 2,3,4mil for a striker he has to be the real deal and give instant returns on the investment.

A striker who has averaged one goal every four matches looks to be a bit of a gamble.

Still, I would have liked to see him in the tic lineup alongside those other prolific strikers such as Sammie, VoH and the big lad loaned to Motherwell last season.

Poor Skippy.

btw

watched a long interview of martin o'neil last night, an excert from the history of Celtic DVD.
Looking back, that team that O'Neil put together really was an excellent side....it just oozed quality (except between the sticks I suppose).
We really were some team, and if anything, underachieved in Europe. Just about every outfield player we had in 2002 was good enough for the english premiership...I'm struggling to think of one that couldn't have got a game somewhere in he prem.

Look at the present squad, and you'd say MAYBE brown, mcgeady, caldwell and mcdonald....but to be quite honest, I wouldn't bet more than a tenner that any of them would nail down a position anywhere in the EPL...possible exception of Scot McDonald.

I'd like to see a decent left sided midfielder brought to Ibrox along with another centre back and a striker.

Since money is very tight I expect to see WS pull some of his old magic and pick up players on Bosmans who will help the club.

Also might see BF and McGregor as well as Beasley, Adam, Gow sold on to free up more wages. This should be the season when some of the younger players on the books take a step forward in the first team pool.

There's noone rushing in to buy any rangers' players...One bid for charlie adam that got knocked back...I can't imagine that rangers are wanting that much for Adam, which can only mean that the offer they got must have been downright insulting...5 grand or something like that methinks....quite honestly, I'd have thought rangers would jump at a couple of hundred grand just to get him off the wage bill.

But there is hardly even a rumour as regards the other players earmarked for the heave...there's a story Eck might take bazza, but ah'll betcha Eck wouldn't be willing to shell out much more than £1m for him...it actually would make a lot of sense for rangers to let him go for free. Mind you, now that Steve Bruce is reported to be launching a £5m bid for Davis, Smith might be forced to hang on to his £30k a week former captain.

"the silence is deafening"

FYI you are the side that has qualifiers in 4 weeks not the Gers, so the priority I would think is for the tic to get in players.

At present it looks like Naka, VoH and Hartley out the door for nothing, Brown and McManus injured, five of your first 11 unavailable for CL qualifiers, enjoy your upcoming matches.

51

If BF can bring in a fee, why would let him go for nothing?

If someone is willing to pay a nominal transfer fee, and you free up his 30k a week, a good bit of business I should think.

Had Big Eck not mentioned Rearrangerz plight in despatches then the Rearrangerz hordez could have been forgiven for thinking that their club had al"ready" gone t!ts up.

Hardly dv.

At present RFC are the SPL champions and as such have no qualifiers to play.

Interesting posts you have mentioning "silence" and "hit a nerve" regarding RFC or its fans.

Methinks you are trying to convince yourself that you may not have any problems in your teams upcoming games.

But it is good to see your interest in RFC, must be tough having to take no for an answer from people who were linked to CFC this off season.

First of all a football forum, for debate.

Second all the headlines in the football pages have been about CFC and signing a manager.

Third the press has been all over Fortune and the Spanish left back being the new players at Parkhead.

Fourth it would be good to see you, being a CFC supporter add to the discussion on the above points.

ps. There is no rumours or activity going on in the press about RFC, we are still on holiday.

Good effort by the Yanks against Brazil, the goal for Brazil inside the first minute of the second half was a killer.

Overall the Samba boys deserved to win.
