THE first day of the T in the Park festival was marred by police reports last night of 18 arrests, more than 40 thefts and 20 drugs offences.
Officers had earlier reported an "excellent start" to the event after increasing their presence following a stabbing at last year's festival.

By 10pm last night, 55,000 people had walked through the gates of the arena, near Balado in Kinross-shire.

But Tayside Police later revealed there were 18 arrests for minor offences, with reports of 43 thefts, two petty assaults and 20 drugs-related offences.

And Neil McDonald, the event's ambulance commander, said 305 people had been seen by first-aiders and 161 presented to the on-site hospital, with six being sent off-site for treatment to minor injuries.

Some 85,000 people are expected to attend the festival, and the weather is expected to remain bright and warm for the most part.

Chief Superintendent Craig Suttie, the event commander, said last night: "The event has got off to an excellent start, and we're very pleased with things so far. The crowd is up for a great time, and there is good engagement between police officers and the audience."

Drug amnesty bins will be placed at the entrance to the campsites, where people can dispose of any illegal substances without being excluded from the event or prosecuted. Plainclothes officers and sniffer dogs will also be present at the festival.

Despite travel chaos in previous years, there were no major delays on the roads yesterday, with about 20,000 festival-goers having arrived to set up camp on Thursday.

Colin Rodger, T in the Park's event manager, said: "We are very pleased with the way this year's event is going so far. The predicted rain has failed to fall, and the sunshine, combined with the new community policing system, has helped to generate a fantastic atmosphere."

Conditions are forecast to stay dry overnight with sunshine today. Rain is forecast for Sunday morning, but it is expected to clear by the afternoon.

Meanwhile, health officials have warned that festival-goers will be asked to leave the site and arrangements made for them to travel home if medical teams diagnose them with swine flu.

Lets hope it stays this way, I watched a 'tad' of T-in-the-Park, on the BBC Links, good coverage and the revellers, all in good spirit and enjoying themselves.
I hope not to miss the Killers, playing today at some point, problem is knowing when they are playing and when the television coverage of them, will be on the BBC?

My comment @1, appears to have been hijacked under this new headline, this was not the headline to-which I posted my comment.

"Excellent Start", was the original Headline, so my referral @#1 is to the 2nd paragraph, just incase you think me being facetious, or the likes.

It is a strangely negative headline for a then positive news story.

Perhaps it should read " Police interference trys but fails to mar opening day of T in the Park "

Fletty73,

It was after midnight, and New Pages for today's News, that I posted, I was more than shocked, on how my comment was dragged under this Headline change, it makes me look Stupid!

Anyway Not Being the Old Victor Meldrew's in life, the opening of T-in-the-Park, in my mind did "Go Smoothly", and I hope the Weather keeps fine, and all have a marvelous time to are attending this Scottish event.
I am just enjoying the coverage of T-in-the-Park, this weekend on the 'telly', as it were, and I will also have a 'neb' in the Scotsman's News, live and fab links to this event.

Try this:

Over 100,000 people congregated to see a set, headlined by the recently reunited Deep Purple, including such legends as The Scorpions, Mountain, Blackfoot, UFO over a period of just one day at Knebworth park, with almost no toilet facilities. The police arrested...nobody.

Rock fans have always been the most maligned but it's those with the semi-skinheads who should be arrested on sight

Charles. I've seen you and you're not that old and, certainly from that angle, you don't look intellectually challenged.

So, will you PLEASE explain to me your apparently random use of punctuation?

You sometimes make good points but the plethora of apostrophe lend the weight of Gorgie Tony.

Stop it.

What a load of tosh!Totaly over policed, just let young people have some fun. With a police to fan ratio of about 1 in 10 of course there will be arrests! Imagine that at the football on a Saturday the jails would be full.Back off!

So they would do well to follow the example set by Hibs fans in Leith Walk before and after games?

Herr Frankfurter
My tag has no bearing on this discussion.
I have been to that festival and I can assure you that it was a hellish experience.
It was " nedstock". I was ashamed to be a Scot.
The behaviour of our young folk was disgraceful and really uncool. There were young folk from the rest of the UK and a few European countries and I know for a fact that the ones I spoke with were terrified and couldnt wait to leave. In fact quite a few did just that - left on Sat morning because of the scummy behaviour of our youth.
I dont like pointing this out but its the truth.
