U-turn sees nurseries' hot meals return

EDINBURGH councillors have formally agreed to reverse the controversial decision to only hand out packed lunches in 14 of the council's 18 nurseries.
Following a campaign by the Evening News, hot meals will again be offered at the stand-alone nurseries, if there is demand.

Councillors have also agreed to reopen three of the six primary school kitchens mothballed last term, if the number of diners consistently hits 130 for a month. The schools are Kirkliston, Hermitage Park and Prestonfield.

The cuts were drawn up after council supplier, Edinburgh Catering Services projected a £500,000 budget deficit because fewer pupils were eating school meals.

The Government's Hungry for Success scheme, which was supposed to "revitalise" school dinners, was accused of causing a drop of nearly 16 per cent in uptake since 2005-6.

The Evening News revealed that instead of food such as roast turkey or breaded haddock, youngsters were being fed processed cheese and fish paste.

This is all good - we need to make sure that our nation's children have good food at lunchtime - I was fortunate enough to go to council schools which provided traditional dinners. At the time I remember thinking the meals were stodgy and old fashioned, looking back now I realise how good it all was. Nothing processed was on the menu, it was all mince n tatties, stews etc.
I'm not advocating we feed children on old fashioned food, however, no processed or re-heated rubbish would be a positive start.
I feel fortunate that both my grandsons attend schools which have the focus on good meals and can see the benefits it brings. Good food = happy attentive children!!!!

The EEN is just doing its job - reporting, although they have helped.

The real heros are the Mums and Dads who were willing to confront the Council with the terrible food their kids were being given.

Good on all of you who protested, let's keep the cooncil on its toes!

Its a 'Well Done' to everyone that made the council see sense!

These little 'tots' are our future and must be looked after correctly while in the care of others, and this means providing a decent meal for them, and not the cheap rubbish some thought appropriate!
