PARENTS fighting to save their children's school from closure claim it is only facing the axe because of a series of council blunders.
Campaigners believe the city council should go "back to the drawing board" over its plans to close Westburn Primary School in Wester Hailes.

Education bosses have admitted making a series of mistakes in the consultation papers regarding the school's roll, facilities and condition of the building, which formed part of the justification for closing the school.

Although a notice has been issued to all parents to redress the errors, parents say it is too little, too late as the public consultation into the council's school closure plans ends on Tuesday.

Westburn is one of three primary schools on the hit list, along with Lismore in Bingham and Bonnington in Leith.

But campaigners believe Westburn would not be on the list if the cross-party forum selecting schools had the full facts to hand.

The two main mistakes were saying the school had the third lowest roll in the city when it has the 14th lowest, and that the condition of the building was "poor" when it is actually satisfactory.

Parent Nicky Scally said: "It is absolutely ridiculous the amount of things they had wrong. The forum has made their decision based on inaccurate information.

"I think this should go back to the drawing board and let the forum decide again with factual and up-to-date information."

The council based its information on the state of the building on a survey carried out in 2003, but since then the school has had its boilers replaced, internal lighting upgraded and a new roof.

Out of the three schools the council is proposing to send Westburn pupils to, the condition of Sighthill and Murrayburn has been rated "poor" while the third, Canal View, is rated "good".

Mrs Scally added: "They have spent £750,000 on Westburn in the last few years and now they are wanting to waste all that money by closing the school. They are wanting us to send our children to schools in a poor state of repair. I find that really distasteful."

Sighthill and Gorgie councillor Eric Milligan said: "It's clear that they have not been thorough and not been particularly sensitive.

"When you put all the mistakes together, it's clear that the consultation process is fatally flawed. The true position wasn't made available and this is inexcusable."

Director of education Gillian Tee said: "Some inaccuracies have been identified and amended in the original consultation paper for Westburn Primary school.

"The amended paper still meets the criteria used by the forum to recommend schools to be considered for closure.

"The criteria used were levels of attainment; how many parents choose their local school; and costs per pupil and occupancy levels.

"I am confident that our consultation process is rigorous, open and transparent."

at the end of the day, the schools involved have too few pupils

part of the blame lies with the parents who do not sent their kids to their local school!

The people who wrote the consultation paper hadn't set foot inside Westburn Primary before Tuesday 23rd of September and had read old reports dating back to around 2002 and drew their own conclusions from the reports which were 6-8 years out of date. EVERY classroom including the nursery has a Promethean Board which costs around £3000 each. They have a new central heating system and have a new roof.

The people also holding the exhibition as to why the other 3 schools are so wonderful turned up with no information and then tried to lay blame on the Janitor saying he had signed for them when he hadn't signed for anything. Their exhibition and arguements are a shambles.

The 3 schools were announced in May for closure but Gillian Tees and Marilyne McLaren had never visited westburn before this date and didn't visit until the 18th of June, which in my eyes was ridiculous and too late.

At the end of the day the pound signs are the only thing the council are interested in. Other schools are holding less than 100 pupils according to the census taken 2 weeks ago but their land will never make the council 1.3 million pounds will it?

Here's the problem I have, they are going to close the schools on the recommendation's of the Cross party Forum, yet before the final decision could be made we have a parent on the Forum booted of on the say so of McClaren.
She did not have the backing of the other members, she decided she was God and She had the final say so.
That parent has been vindicated on every thing McClaren said about her, McClaren was only going on hear say and we all know that, when the Ball was in her court she had no proof whats so ever.
Once the report is made public, and the Standard Commission's also make there Decissions she will have No alternitive but to resign.
Where does that leave the Consultations then.
Ill tell you where, Down the pan.
If I were one Linda Flex I would make sure it is pay back and see every one who had any thing to do with the Deformation of her Character pulled through the Courts.
She does and knows there is a lot of people supporting her through this Difficult time she has gone through.
It wont be to much longer for her to wait.

How callus of your comments, a picture does not always show the full effects, My daughter suffered the same 4 years ago, she fell int the school playground.
It didn't look to bad, yes there was a lot of blood.
Like the wee boy she went to the sick kids, she was then transferred to the western where she had to endure the pain of having 42 stitches internally and 7 out side her mouth.
Once the x-rays cme back it was disclosed the front Tooth was smashed to bits, she then had to go through the pain of having the Tooth along with the nerves and the root all taken out by Local anesthetic.
She then had to attend the Dental fOr 6 weeks on the trot, she has had to wear a plate with a false front Tooth for the last 4 years, which i am sure you will agree can be quite distressing for a 12 year old.
Even now she still attends the Dental where they have now decided that the will put a Bridge in to try and boost her confidence a little bit.
May I suggest a little more compashion is shown when we are in deed talking about a child.
What makes you think his mother is seeking compensation ? maybe just maybe she is highlighting the story so that they will now fix the playground.
Last word on this, Would you be so smug with you comments if this was indeed your child ?
No i don't think so

Correct No 9, Nigel Ironside went to Westburn primary school and is now in charge of Saughton Prison....well spotted.

I think you question should be "has anyone famous ever came out of (as in born) in Edinburgh?", nevermind Westburn Primary...I can only think of 3 or 4 at most!

Yes, lets close all schools that have had no one famous has came out of...do you work for the Council?
