A STUDENT with learning difficulties has been praised as an inspiration after scooping a top prize at Telford College.
Maria Stirling, 24, picked up the Student of the Year Award for her contribution and achievement as part of a hospitality programme.

The Pilton woman, who first attended Telford seven years ago, was given a digital camera as a prize. She said she wanted to go on now and pursue a career in the catering industry.

She said: "I have really enjoyed my time at Telford. I love cooking and the staff are great. Telford has really helped me a lot – I still can't believe I am Student of the Year."

Her lecturer Denise Paterson paid tribute to her for her achievements, which also include a number of SVQs.

She said: "Throughout her time at Telford Maria has matured into a delightful young woman who is determined to succeed. She is always keen to listen and offers help to others when she can.

"Receiving this award is a great achievement."
