ANDY Robinson has confirmed that Edinburgh will not be losing internationalists this summer, but they remain unlikely to land any top names as the club tries to develop a combative squad free of the attentions of predatory English and French clubs.
The Edinburgh coach was "shocked" to discover the salary demands of leading targets, which he said had doubled over the eight months since he joined the capital side. Robinson has been looking, but his priority, after the club lost several players la
st summer, was to stop the haemorrhaging of talent.

He said: "The market has changed since I first arrived at the club.

"There has probably been a 50 per cent increase in overseas players' salaries since I came here – £140,000 a year ago is now £210,000. But we talked about this and we felt we had to keep our players that have been really performing, our young players, to ensure Edinburgh rugby is not seen as an academy for the premiership in England or France.

"Ross Rennie and John Houston are examples of young players who have really performed well for us and have a huge future so signing them on good contracts were vital to allow Edinburgh to grow.

"The salary cap is going up in England next season and I've been told the budgets the Irish teams have, which are incredible, and the bidding wars that are now going on ... well, we're not at a (financial] level to compete."

One young talent not staying at Edinburgh is Stephen McColl, the talented age-group centre, who is quitting the national academy for Doncaster, coached by former Edinburgh head coach Lynn Howells.

Rob Moffat, the Edinburgh backs coach, admitted the current midfield talent at the club precluded him from offering McColl a full-time contract, which merely underlines the problems of keeping native talent in a system with just two professional teams and one academy.

Meanwhile, Robinson is pleased to have Mike Blair back at scrum-half now that the Scotland internationalist has fully recovered from the concussion he suffered against Glasgow earlier this month, but he is missing a clutch of other first-choices to injury for the visit to the Ospreys tomorrow.

Houston is out with a head knock and joins Simon Webster (hamstring), Mark Robertson (shoulder), Gavin Kerr (neck), Andrew Kelly (calf), Simon Cross (back) and Craig Hamilton (thigh) in the treatment room. Hugo Southwell is also missing this weekend due to family commitments.

Edinburgh team (to play Ospreys at the Liberty Stadium, tomorrow, kick-off 7.10pm): C MacRae; A Maxwell, B Cairns, N De Luca, A Turnbull; P Godman, M Blair; A Allori, R Ford, G Cross, M Mustchin, B Gissing, A Hogg (capt), D Callam, A MacDonald.

Subs: S Lawrie, K Traynor, F Pringle, S Newlands, G Laidlaw, D Blair, M Dey.

Mr Ferguson struggles a bit with numbers doesn't he.

Wait a minute #2, it's a fair point. Either Ferguson can't do the maths, or he's being deliberately sensationalist; either way it's not great journalism is it?

I thought he only struggled in writing. Has he not just written what was said without checking to see if it made sense or was logical. Implying Mr Robinson might struggle with his maths.

ummmm 50% of 140 is 70, add 70 to 140 and you get 210

Surely this is a bit of a non story
How many of us would have expected big name signings even if the salaries were £100,000 per annum !
Remember whose holding the purse strings !!!

you cant blame the SRU
They thre money at the pro teams and they didnt attract that many fans

Now there isnt a lot of money, it will be tight until private investors see oppertunities.

I went to a meeting at London Scottish a couple of weeks ago, for history buffs a club who has produced more international players than any other rugby club in the WORLD, and we heard of the aspirations of returning to the big time, well National One anyway .

I understand it is being funded by the consortium who tried to bring the Celtic league to London and If we have people out their with more money than sense as appose to the SRU who have no money and no sense,( even less since the bean counter got his legs under the table,) the SRU should be right behind these guys lining up asking how can we help and how much do you need.

But then again with the SRU track record in “investor management ” Kennedy”, granted now in from the cold, “Burgess and Logan” still frozen out and the “Caruthers Brothers” somewhere in Siberia I could understand some concern about them not wanting to taking the SRU shillings.

It would be interesting to know what other options there are, as I assume the SRU lose the third pro team grant money next year with no prospect of replacing this team in Scotland this is an opportunity for the SRU to do something which would be beneficial to Scottish rugby within the current administration’s particular field of expertise ie “On the Cheap”

At least then, as with Edinburgh, if we haemorrhage talent down south it could be to a club with Scottish Blood running through its veins and the best of Scottish rugby at it’s heart.

Yes you can blame the bloody SRU they are a set of clowns. They have ruined Rugby in this country and they keep getting away with it. We are in a position where one man at the top is aloud to be the sole judge of all rugby decision's in this country and we all have to suffer. Mr Mckie came in to turn the financial side of the SRU around, and he simply has not done it!!
He got rid of the Borders ruined rugby in a major heartland of Scotland and saved next to nothing. Wake up and smell the coffee, even with Glasgows big name signings last year what have they done???? Darrel Gibson etc waste of money when three of their big names signings that were not scottish elegable would have paid for 15 - 20 academy players sallery's at the Borders where they would have been playing pro rugby.
Not training alone at Murrayfield getting no pro team envolvement and playing for clubs that they dont get to train with. Why cant everyone see we need to invest in the Top Clubs to make a 8 or 10 team semi pro league with a mixture of all academy players Scottish pro players and exsiting club players who should have had the oppertunity to play at a better level if the oppertunities had been there. Lets not even think of funding another pro team but use the money to fund 8-10 top club teams to feed our 2 pro teams. This would put the intrest back into club rugby, the players stepping from the club league into the pro teams would have a conection with clubs again and this would most def build the crowds at our Pro games. Does this make too much sense?? Can the SRU not see why the clubs and SRU and not conected??

MUTU,

Spital 01/05/2008 10:04:50
The worst thing the SRU could ever do , would be to fund an English based club playing a standard that below Division 2 up here. London Scottish you say are striving to make the English 1st division?? Correct me if I am wrong but that is a semi pro league one of the English premiership is it not with only 3 full time clubs in a 16 team league. Melrose beat a full strenght Rotherham team in pre season this season a team that missed out on the premiership by a couple of point last term?? So why would we want to fund an English based team before our own??? I am sure this is being concidered by the idiots at Murrayfield and if it happens and they turn their back on their clubs and their own people we are heading for serious melt down. that will be the final straw in this debacle.

People in the Borders ruined the Border Reivers - they did not turn up for the pro team. Stop living in fantasy land.
How many Borderers will be a Murrayfield on saturday? If 20,000 turn up for all the competitions then they will be lucky.
And Mutu it's happening already, sponsorship of London Scottish to the tune of £500,000. That way up and coming Scottish players will get exposure elsewhere, this was announced several weeks ago.

Ha ha ha Stoo, luckyrugger and nhl - what fools you have made of yourselves today with your poor maths ... but what is new? Now, let us try again: 50% of £140,000 is what stoo? Apology for the writer attacked likely nhl? Numpties.

Hahahahahahah #12 and all who are truly worse than the journalist.

Read the 2nd paragraph again and tell me if you think that tallies up with the soundbite quote in the 4th para. True numpties.

Factotum - ask your teacher tomorrow. Doubling £140k would be £280k.

Don’t single out the Borders for not supporting their pro team while Glasgow and Edinburgh continue to run with miserable crowds. This is a problem largely created by the SRU
We had a well supported district game 12 years ago (particularly the South). When pro rugby arrived, the rest of the world moved on while we got stuck in petty squabbles.

MT,

Why in gods name would Edinburgh want to go and waste their money, and more imortantly a place for a Scotland qualified player for a non qualified foreigner. It is bad enough as it is having only one and a half Scottish pro teams(Glasgow is the half with all the imports). Furthermore, Edinburgh did perfectly well this season with Scottish players. Show some faith and respect to your own guys. signing so called "big names" is just a huge slap in the face to Scotland players, Scottish rugby and perhaps most significantly of all the national team, which ultimately suffers the most.
17

MT,

01/05/2008 22:54:26
signing foreigners does NOTHING for Scottish rugby and developing rising talent. We should sack Gibson from Glasgow and give a guy like McColl a go there.

The Laird of Kitakyushu,

Money is the root of all evil, and lack of it is severely hampering the Scottish game at the top level. It is clear enough that the resources are not there, whether to buy in top players or develop home-grown academy ones.

Then again, some of the new ELVs - especially the free kicks replacing most penalties - are going to ruin the game whether you have money or not! The SRU does not have a monopoly on incompetence after all.

Edinburgh Pete ,

Agree with MT
We should be focusing our money on our own talent and developing players for the future good of our game rather than chasing some Aussie or NZ looking to secure their pension. We can already see the impact on England with the influx of players to the GP and Ireland are heading same way by adopting a similar policy. Spend our money wisely we dont have much of it.

I was part of the well supported district system and I believe my team Caledonia were best three years on the trot at that time.
Edinburgh do not run with miserable crowds,Murrayfield is a bit of a barn but perhaps if you were to turn up on a friday night you would see that actually we are quite a happy bunch.
Oh and bye the way it is probable that the season ticket holders will exceed 3,000 for next season. This is just about treble an attendance at a Borders match.
If you want to be parochial and play with yourselves down there then carry on, have fun.
