AN attempt to take this year's Fringe festival to Livingston has been branded such a success that organisers hope it will quadruple in size next year.
The Fringe on the Fringe completely sold out its ten-day run of 20 shows at the town's Almondvale Shopping Centre.

Productions making the leap included The Golden Voyage of Sinbad, Pirates! and Goldilocks and the Three Hoods.

Lloyd McDermott, of the brand agency Tsuko, which masterminded the event, said: "Getting local residents to go along to Fringe events has always been an issue.

"Many avoid the city altogether at this time of the year. But here, we had a series of events – a sort of outreach programme – that encouraged many people to try out more shows. They loved it and the performers loved it."

His colleague Louise Arnold added: "This started as an exercise in being creative around the shopping centre's business objectives to show how close it is to Edinburgh city centre."

Just because they're trying to quadruple the size, does not excuse the use of the word "fourth" in the headline.

Are EEN headline writers trying to beat the red-top tabloids at their own game? Please don't!

Taking the Fringe out of Edinburgh into West Lothian in this manner, isn't a bad thing. However, people view the Fringe as part of "The Festival" which is actually made up of a number of different festivals such as the Book Festival.

Therefore, the fact that this is no longer just taking place in Edinburgh means that technically speaking, we won't be able to refer to it as the Edinburgh Festival in future. Instead, we will therefore need to refer to it as the Lothian Festival.
