Overnight misery for tram bridge

RESIDENTS have been warned they could be disturbed by noise from overnight tram works for the next two weekends.

A bridge to carry the trams over Balgreen Road is being installed this weekend, while work on a bridge across the Water of Leith, a few hundred yards further along, will be carried out both this weekend and next. Beam installation for a bridge at South Gyle will also take place next weekend.

Contractors have to work during night-time hours because the sites are so close to the rail tracks and no work can be carried out while trains are running.

In a letter to residents, tram
officials warned: “With all major civil engineering projects, the works will generate noise at times; therefore, all practical mitigation measures have been considered to minimise any disruption to the local community. There are, however, certain activities whereby limited measures can be applied such as reducing the audible sirens on reversing vehicles and crane lifting operations.

“We would like to express our sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused and would like to assure you that every effort will be made to minimise any disruption to local residents and businesses.”

City transport convener Lesley Hinds, pictured, said: “The installation of these three bridges will form an essential part of the overall programme to deliver a tram line for Edinburgh. The work has been programmed to cover the shortest possible period but alternative dates have been factored in to take into account any unseasonal weather which may cause delays. We apologise for the disruption the work will cause and would also like to thank residents for their continued patience as the construction process continues.”

Balgreen Road will be closed at the bridge from 7pm tonight until 5am on Monday. No road closures are involved with the Water of Leith bridge.

South Gyle Access Road will be closed at the bridge from 7pm on Friday, August 3 to 6am on Monday, August 6.
