London Olympics 2012: Morgan helps GB women volleyballers to historic first nailbiting victory

EDINBURGH volleyball star Joanne Morgan admitted she had to pinch herself after helping Great Britain women’s team record their first ever
Olympic victory this morning.

Morgan and Co were looking to bounce back from a disappointing loss to Russia in their Games opener on Saturday as they took on Algeria at Earls Court. And that is exactly what they did, winning three sets to two in a tight affair, 28-year-old Morgan playing her part in the historic victory. GB came from 1-0 and 2-1 behind to secure the most thrilling of five-set wins, with the clock showing 12.37am when the final point was won.

There isn’t much time for the team to celebrate with Italy next up tomorrow, a team that have won their opening two games.

But after tasting victory,
setter Morgan admits she can’t wait to take on the Italians
after writing her name into the Olympic record books.

“It feels amazing to have won,” she said. “We have made history with our first ever
Olympic appearance and now we have our first win. It was scrappy but it doesn’t have to be pretty – a win is a win and we will certainly take it.

“The crowd were fantastic, especially in the fifth and final set because we needed that energy boost and they were like a seventh player for us. We have
Italy next and they are a good side but we will now go into training with a bit of a boost and we will take on Italy feeling confident and refreshed.”
