Rugby: Currie gather Hunter for new season

Edinburgh Rugby’s Gregor Hunter is set to play for Currie next season when not required at Pro 12 or European Cup level.

The 21-year-old stand off/centre is currently on an elite development contract and will be phased back into the club scene after spending the closed season playing in New Zealand at the Lincoln University club, Christchurch, under the Macphail Scholarship scheme. It had been expected that Hunter would be attached either to the Gala club where he learned the game, or Heriot’s with whom he had a spell on moving to the Capital. However, the fact Currie have seen Matt Scott step up through
Edinburgh ranks to play in four of Scotland’s last five Tests has left them mainly looking to Cypriot Andrew Binikos to fill the No.10 jersey and Hunter’s availability will see a potential member of coach Andy Robinson’s national squad getting regular games in the more intense environs of club rugby’s ten-team top flight.
