Talk of the Town: Students stitch up awards ceremony

IF the awards are anything to go by, two city students have just sewn up a bright future for themselves.

Emma Hardstaff and Riona Horrox, who both study at Edinburgh College of Art, were named among the cream of the crop at the annual Graduate Fashion week in London, which took place earlier this week.

Amid tough competition and a strict judging panel, Emma clinched the David Band Textiles Award, while Riona took home the Menswear Award from the ceremony at Earls Court.

Overcome with joy, a delighted – but stunned – Riona spoke afterwards, but only to reveal: “I can’t even speak.”

That’s the spirit – city author at number five

WILLOWBRAE-based author and teacher Margherita Still has been gaining a steady following with her Kindle book for children, Isla and the Spirit Police.

The book, which is currently free to download, tells the tale of young Isla MacDuff, who is recruited by the government’s most secret department to save the souls of captured children.

The title has stormed the charts on Amazon, where it this week reached number five in rankings for free children’s Kindle downloads.

Considering that the top three places were taken by Robert Louis Stevenson and Rudyard Kipling, we think that’s what you’d call a spirited performance.

Sausage surprise on offer

WE told yesterday how a trip to Deep Sea World on Father’s Day this Sunday could put dad in the mood for fish and chips on the way home.

But now his head could be turned thanks to an offering from a supermarket chain.

Morrisons is celebrating the day by offering “The Daddy of all Sausages”, a ten-inch, half-pound delight. Sounds like a Father’s Day feast awaits.

Hold on tight for a hug

FEW things cheer us up when we’re feeling blue more than a hug.

So, it’s a shame to hear many residents of Edinburgh are not being embraced enough, with a survey revealing one-third of city dwellers suffer from cuddle craves.

But just in case reading this has put you in the mood for a squeeze, the good people over at cuddly bear brand Forever Friends have released some hug help for those unfamiliar with the concept.

They say: “Hold on tight – a firm hold best conveys a genuine hug, the most satisfying hug always ends with an extra supportive squeeze.”
