Talk of the Town: Rebus not up for cup, says Rankin

LAST week, this column revealed how Talk of the Town regular Ian Rankin was in danger of missing Saturday’s historic Scottish Cup final after agreeing to be interviewed at the same time as the game.

Well, while the city crime writer was struggling to tune in to the big match, he left followers to his Twitter feed with no doubts as to whether his most famous creation was at Hampden.

The author replied to a fan’s question by saying: “Rebus would not be there. He has little interest in football and supports neither Hibs nor Hearts.”

We’ll move to remove Glasgow’s dance crown

EDINBURGH has Glasgow in its sights.

Not content with the most-celebrated festival on earth and the world’s highest-regarded Hogmanay party, the Capital is after another crown.

At the end of June, the Big Dance Edinburgh will attempt to slide into the Guinness Book of World Records – for the world’s largest tea dance.

With the current record being set in Glasgow four years ago, Capital movers and shakers will be keen to step out on top.

Hair pair raise locks of cash

IT started off as a simple snipe in the pub – and it left them without a simple snip for nearly a year.

Garry Henderson and Cameron Halley were enjoying a pint in their local, the Gordon Arms in West Linton, ten months ago when, sick of being teased over his lengthy hair, Garry suggested the pair take part in a sponsored “Grow-a-thon” of their hair and beards for charity.

Since then they’ve raised £1100 for Breakthrough Breast Cancer.

Garry said: “We came up with the idea as a joke due to people continually asking if I had had a perm as I was growing my hair.”

Bad day for Elvis comeback

IT seems the cup final wasn’t the only show in town (OK, so it was in another town, but you get the point) on Saturday at 3pm.

Talk of the Town received a late invitation on Friday night to a concert the next day that might have filled out Murrayfield or Hampden ten times over – had its promises not been ever so slightly outlandish.

We were asked along to Stevenson College to a see a group of people take to the stage for their first live singing performance. The e-mail continued “they will sing with professional musicians” before listing the names of Bob Marley and Elvis Presley.

Let’s hope someone had a quiet word.
