Firefighters are tackling a large blaze at Edinburgh's Wester Hailes Education Centre.

Several appliances reportedly to the scene at the school at Murrayburn Drive on Friday evening after plumes of black smoke were spotted emerging from inside.

Concerned residents also said large flames could be seen and it was subsequently reported that firefighters discovered the fire within a cupboard inside the building.

City councillor Mark Brown tweeted that a “significant fire” was well underway, adding that emergency services - including several fire fighting appliances - were currently in attendance dealing with the blaze.

A spokeswoman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were alerted at 8.04pm to reports of a fire within a school.

"We mobilised seven appliances to Wester Hailes Education Centre where firefighters were met by a fire within a cupboard.
