Tributes to Ian McCance after being killed by taxi

TRIBUTES have been paid to a “much-loved” city 
accountant who was killed after being knocked down by a black taxi cab as he made his way home on Burns 
Night.

Ian McCance, from Marchmont Crescent, was struck within yards of his home as he crossed Marchmont Road near its junction with Warrender Park Road in the early hours of Saturday.

The 64-year-old was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary to be treated for serious head injuries, but died in hospital.

The road was closed for around four hours after the collision – at around 3.10am on Saturday – while police began their investigations.

In a statement released through police, his family said: “Our family is devastated by the sudden and tragic loss of our much-loved and loving father.” A barmaid at nearby pub The Earl of Marchmont, where Mr McCance was a well-known regular, said: “He used to come in often and always seemed nice enough and 
popular.

“It’s sad to think that he’s been killed as he seemed a good guy.”

Floral tributes had today been left on a pedestrian crossing near the site of the fatal incident.

A spokesman for the Institute of Chartered Accountants Scotland (ICAS), of which Mr McCance was a long-time member, said: “We at ICAS were very saddened to hear about the death of our member Ian McCance in such tragic 
circumstances.

“Our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues at this difficult time.”

Meanwhile, a man is being treated in hospital after being seriously hurt when he was struck by a car at around 7.40pm on Sunday.

The 56-year-old was crossing Milton Road at the junction with Magdalene Drive when he was involved in a collision with a silver Renault Laguna.

He was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, where he remains in a serious condition.

A 45-year-old was treated with minor injuries after being struck by a navy Citroen Relay van while crossing a busy road yesterday afternoon.

Emergency services raced to the scene after the collision at around 5.40pm at the junction of Holyrood Road and St Mary’s Street.
