Speeding hotspots to be monitored
HOTSPOTS for speeding drivers in East Lothian are being monitored by mobile safety cameras as part of a summer crackdown.
Three rural roads with a history of motorists breaking the speed limit will be regularly visited by a police van equipped with cameras.
Research carried out by Road Safety Scotland has revealed that the worst accidents take place on rural roads and they account for three out of four road deaths. The most common causes of these fatalities are loss of control and driving too fast for the conditions.
Julie Roy, Lothian and Borders Safety Camera Partnership Manager, said: “If you are driving at an inappropriate speed you won’t be able to stop in time if there is something unexpected on the road. I ask that all motorists observe the speed limits to help keep the roads safer for all road users.”
Cllr Michael Veitch, Cabinet Member for Transport, added: “Whether you are a local resident or visitor, drivers must remain aware of appropriate speeds and that these roads are also in constant use by slow moving agricultural traffic. The mobile cameras provide an additional reminder of the need to remain vigilant.”
