Solar boost for art centre

AN arts centre has been given thousands of pounds to put towards its new energy system.

The Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop, in Hawthornvale, Newhaven, reopened recently following a year-long renovation.

The purpose-built facility was handed an £8000 grant from the ScottishPower Green Energy Trust to pay for the installation of a complex solar thermal heating and hot water system.

Engineers have estimated that the new building will save 9.24 megawatts of electricity per year, which equates to more than 17 million Celsius heat units annually.

The centre provides workshops and facilities for artists as well as the public.
