Review: Gilbert And Sullivan in Brief(s), Pleasance Courtyard

FOUR huge egos are faced with a big task, to perform the collected works of Gilbert and Sullivan in 60 minutes.

* * *

Apart from the obvious time constraints, each character must also compete for the spotlight whilst working as a team to accomplish this operetta
masterclass.

Expect pirates, sailors, major generals and damsels in distress.

All the way from New York city, Queens Theatre, the performers endeavour to take you through all 14 of composer Sullivan and lyricist Gilbert’s creations without so much as a pause for breath.

There are a few hiccups along the way but you wouldn’t expect any less from these four divas.

Written and directed by Queens Theatre executive director Ray Cullom, the show is an hour of Gilbert & Sullivan heaven.

With a vast selection of the duo’s hits ringing round the auditorium, you cannot help but hum and tap along, even if you are not that familiar with their work.

The four-strong cast and their long-suffering pianist gel perfectly to dish up a thoroughly enjoyable performance that will leave you wanting more.

Until Monday
