Rare lobster saved from boiling pot

A RARE type of giant lobster destined for a restaurant somewhere on the continent has been saved from the pot.

The lobster, which is normally found in the Mediterranean and can grow up to 60cm in length, was caught off Tiree on the west coast, and moved to Deep Sea World.

Deep Sea World’s Michael Morris said: “We’re extremely grateful to have been able to get hold of such a fine specimen. She’s close to half-a-metre in length and is in absolutely fantastic condition.

“On arrival she was kept in quarantine to ensure she has settled into our systems before being transferred into one of our temperate rock pool displays, where she is doing very well.”

Although found extensively in the warm waters of the Mediterranean the spiny lobster is also attracted to the Gulf Stream currents off the coasts of western Scotland.
