Pupils help build homes in Romania

PUPILS and staff from a high school in the city have spent ten days building homes for orphans in one of the poorest countries in Europe.

A group of 14 sixth-year pupils and two teachers from The Royal High School helped to build safe, clean and comfortable houses for orphans in Beius, Romania.

The project, in aid of charity Habitat for Humanity, is thought to be the first of its kind by a public high school in Edinburgh.

The school raised more than £20,000 for the charity, with pupils and staff organising a series of fundraisers to help reach their target.

The team worked alongside professional builders to paint, plaster, floor and roof the houses.

Sarah Stein, one of the pupils involved, said: “We all understood that there was a real purpose to what we were doing.”

The school hopes to run the project again in the future.
