Probe into officer’s ‘scoreline gesture’
AN investigation has been launched after a police officer was photographed apparently making a “5-1” gesture to fans during Sunday’s Edinburgh derby.
The officer, believed to be a special constable, was snapped in front of the Hearts supporters before the image quickly circulated on the internet following the 1-1 draw at Easter Road.
Lothian and Borders Police yesterday said they were not aware of the photograph, but today confirmed that a probe had begun after formal complaints were made to the force.
The 5-1 gesture – representing the scoreline in the all-Edinburgh Cup final in May – has been used by Hearts supporters to taunt their rivals ever since their historic victory over Hibs.
Hibs season-ticket holder and SNP councillor for the Craigentinny/Duddingston ward, Stefan Tymkewycz, said the officer’s actions had been “totally inappropriate”.
He said: “It might have been intended as a light-hearted gesture but there could be a small minority who would not take it like that.
“There is the potential for trouble to be caused.”
