Portrait may fetch £100K

A PORTRAIT of an 18th-century Scots lawyer is expected to sell for up to £100,000 at an auction in the Capital.

The 263-year-old painting of Lord Stonefield, John Campbell, by Allan Ramsay, will go on sale at Queen Street-based Bonhams’
Scottish Sale.

John Campbell of Stonefield, better known as Lord Stonefield, was a prominent Scottish lawyer, admitted to the bar in 1748. He was appointed Lord of Session in 1762 and sat as a Judge of the Supreme Court for
39 years until his death in 1801.

Chris Brickley, who is Bonhams’ head of pictures in Scotland, said: “The painting was
on show in London recently and it was much admired.

“It’s very exciting to have this, things like this don’t come up that often as it has been in the family since it was painted.”
