Police push bike safety to road users

A CAMPAIGN to promote safer cycling in south Edinburgh was set to be launched today by police.

Officers will offer advice to motorists and cyclists in the Liberton and Gilmerton areas to make them aware of their responsibilities on the roads.

Police will patrol at traffic-lighted junctions to educate drivers about advanced stopping lines, the red areas marked for pedal bikes which are designed to make junctions safer for cyclists.

Cyclists will also be encouraged to use lights and wear high-visibility clothing, while drivers will be reminded to slow down and give room when passing cyclists.

Leaflets entitling cyclists to ten per cent off cycle lights at city bike shops will be distributed.

Officers plan to focus on the large number of people who travel to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. A “Streets Ahead” event is set to take place at the hospital on October 29, where officers will offer road safety advice to cyclists.

Pc Graeme Stewart, who organised the campaign, said: “With the autumn and winter months now upon us and the impact this has on daylight and road conditions, it is extremely important for cyclists to take the appropriate steps to ensure their safety.”
