Perverts tracking from space
Convicted sex offenders will be monitored by satellite tracking devices if new government plans are successful.
A pilot scheme of the tracking system, which would be applied to released offenders, such as Da Vinci rapist Robert Greens, is set to start in April next year.
The tough new measures would see offenders wear an ankle tag that can be tracked by satellite, allowing police to monitor offenders if they enter “no-go areas”, such as schools. playgrounds or the addresses of victims. While the full details of the scheme have yet to be released, it is understood it would involve monitoring both high and low-risk offenders across the country.
The latest government figures showed there were 3100 registered sex offenders in Scotland, including 30 considered to be at high risk of re-offending.
A Scottish Government spokeswoman said: “We are tendering for a contract which will have GPS tagging capability.”
