Pensioner loses store fall claim
THE former manager of the Dominion Cinema has lost a claim for damages after she fell down the steps of a Hanover Street store.
Moira Brown, 80, was injured after losing her footing as she went down the steps from the Lakeland store in June 2009. The pensioner, who was 78 at the time, suffered extensive bruising to her right side and several fractured ribs.
Ms Brown launched the legal action for compensation alleging that store bosses were negligent for failing to install a handrail at the steps, and a sign to inform customers there was a second entrance on George Street which had a handrail.
Lord Woolman, however, ruled that the firm did not have a duty to install a handrail at the entrance following a hearing at the Court of Session in Edinburgh.
Ms Brown, who worked at the Dominion for 42 years and was manager for 20, still acts as its company secretary.
