Mum hailed for college dedication

A MUM of eight whose youngest son suffers from Down’s Syndrome has been honoured after completing a college course.

Nicola O’Rourke, who lives in Leith, received the prize from Jewel & Esk College at the Celebration of Achievement Awards for her outstanding commitment to her Get Ready for College course.

The award celebrates the hard work of students who go the extra mile to succeed.

Nicola said: “I’ve never won anything like this before. I was so pleased to accept the award after all of my hard work.”

She has now secured a place on the Child, Health and Social Care Intermediate 2 course at the college and said that her son Pip’s struggle in hospital had inspired her to become a nurse.

She said: “I used to watch the nurses on the ward when Pip was getting treated and found it really inspiring.”
