Mourners flee as fire starts at crematorium

MOURNERS attending a funeral service at Mortonhall Crematorium were evacuated after a fire broke out.

Firefighters rushed to the city council-owned facility following an emergency call received shortly after 1pm yesterday.

Council bosses said mourners waited outside while crews battled the blaze.

There were no reports of injuries and managers at the crematorium said normal service was resumed within an hour.

A council spokeswoman said: “We can confirm that earlier today the fire brigade attended a minor fire at Mortonhall Crematorium that broke out in one cremator during the cremation process.

“The building was evacuated as a precaution and we apologise for any inconvenience and distress caused. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.”
