POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a man was attacked in Midlothian.

The incident happened around 7pm yesterday in the Bonnyrigg area.

A 20-year-old man was walking on the footpath between the old railway line and Rosewell Road when two men approached from behind and forced him to the ground at the steps near Cockpen View.

A struggle ensued before both attackers made off and detectives are now urging anyone who can assist with their enquiries to come forward.

The first suspect is described as white, in his 30s with a medium build and a bald head. He was wearing a black zipper jacket with puffed arms and light-blue jeans.

The second suspect is described as white with dark hair and wearing dark clothing.

Detective Constable Steven Smith said: “We are still trying to establish the full circumstances of this incident. However, it would appear to be a random and unprovoked attack.

“There were potentially a number of people in the area at the time, as the local Astroturf football pitches are believed to have been in use and passing motorists or pedestrians may also have seen something suspicious.

“Anyone with information relating to this assault is asked to contact police immediately.”

Those with information can contact Lothian and Borders Police on 0131 311 3131, or the charity Crimestoppers in complete anonymity on 0800 555 111.
