Jockey’s funeral to take place on Friday

The funeral of jump jockey Campbell Gillies will take place at the city’s Mortonhall Crematorium at noon on Friday.

Gillies died following a swimming pool accident on holiday in Corfu last Tuesday, a day before his 22nd birthday.

He was a rising star in the jumping ranks and celebrated a first Cheltenham Festival winner on Brindisi Breeze for Scottish trainer Lucinda Russell in the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle.

The family will not be wearing black to the service and have encouraged the same for all attending, as well as requesting family flowers only.

After the service, the funeral party will move on to Musselburgh racecourse for a memorial ceremony.

His uncle, Rory McNeill, last week said: “The whole family is devastated and trying to come to terms with our loss.

“Campbell was dearly loved by one and all.”
