HIV charity wins social care award

A PROJECT run by Edinburgh-based charity Waverley Care has scooped a social services award for its work with children and young people.

The charity won the Children and Young People category of the Scottish Social Services Council’s Care Accolades on Friday, a ceremony showcasing the very best of the care sector.

Waveley Care’s Children and Families Project works with children and families who are affected by HIV or hepatitis C, helping them to cope with the stigma, fear and isolation that come with the conditions.

Grant Sugden, director of Waverley Care said the charity was “delighted” to win the award. “Despite treatment advances, support is still needed to assist children and families to cope with the stigma, secrecy, isolation, fear and risk of family breakdown,” he said. “Waverley Care helps by providing stability for children in an environment where they can talk openly about their own or their parent’s HIV.”

Aileen Campbell, Minister for Children and Young People, said: “The professionalism and dedication of those working in Scotland’s social services can never be underestimated.”
